These two instructions are confusing as they seem to contradict each other.

  1. Do not assume the surname from the surnames of others mentioned in the document.

2. A spouse's name, if listed, may have been recorded in parentheses after the name of the principal individual. The surname should be indexed for both individuals.

@Ashlee C. The hierarchy is contradicting again.

@judithluellen Can you give me the name of the project you are working on?

@Ashlee C. It looks like City Directories Part D. Part B is currently available but doesn't contain the contradiction.

Edit: Part A is available now (or maybe I just missed it earlier) but it also doesn't contain the contradiction.

In City Directories Part D, I found instruction number two under the project instructions. I found instruction number one under General Index Guidelines and Surnames. It says "Do not assume the surname from the surnames of others, such as a parent or spouse, unless directed otherwise in the project instructions." In this case, the project instructions say to index the spouses with the same surname. If this is not the right batch, or if I missed another place where instruction 1 was found, please let me know.

Thank you for your answer. So, do I understand that if it is listed as spouse you then use the surname for both 'spice' (plural for spouse - teehee) even though it does not mention surname of spouse.

If you are indexing the City Directories, part D, then yes, that is what the project instructions say. It's a good practice to always read and follow the project instructions. (And I love your plural for spouse😀)

Thank you for the work you do. I used to do a lot of indexing about 4 or 5 years ago. Now I am having a lot of free time so I want to get back to it. It has sure changed in the last few years.
