I'm working on indexing a US City Directory and encountered several Ditto Marks while going through. I believe the signify a repeat of some information such as Surname or Address, but I haven't been able to figure this out from context yet. Do you know what the Ditto marks might signify here?

The ditto marks means the person has the same Surname as the first person listed.

Ex: " John is indexed as John Humphries.
