If a DOB field has a letter in it, do I omit the letter or add a special character to flag it?

While indexing, I came across this question: If a DOB field has a letter in it, do I omit the letter or add a special character to flag it? The DOB field is typed as June K5 1955. I don't want to omit something if I need to bring the attention of a reviewer to the extra character. Thank you!

Generally, If it is one character, use ?. For two or more, use *. Double-digit birth days, like 10 or 22, are different. If you are unable to decipher both characters, mark the filled Ctrl+U (unreadable) instead of **.
