What does the word cognomen mean in a baptism record? Is it the surname? I know how index nomen pagunum .

    Cognomen is Latin for a third given name or nickname. Ex Henry Albert David Smith This often happens when the parents want to honor both grandfathers and a favorite uncle when naming the first-born son.

    Ex Henrrikus Or "Hank" Smith --Hank is a nickname so we use "Or" when indexing the given name.
