How to research Finnish ancestors from Vaasa, Finland?

I will be in Vaasa, Finland at the latter end of August.  I wanted to do some family history research while I'm there.  We are missing information on many relatives that lived in that area in the 1600-1700s. However, I don't know who to contact, or where to search when I'm there.  To further complicate things, I do not speak Finnish.

Thank you for your question. I will send it to an expert who is familiar with the genealogy of that area.

    Hello Michael Mantyla,

I am a consultant in the FamilySearch Center in Vaasa and I will be happy to help you with your family history when you come to Vaasa. Maybe we could be in touch beforehand - I could check what kind of information you need. My email address is mirja.aromaa@gmail.com.

And I even have a Family Book about The Mäntylä house/farm in Jurva which is near Vaasa, 35 miles from Vaasa. I can contact the relatives of the woman who wrote the book. She herself lives in Sweden - maybe I can get his contact information too, if it seems like you belong to the same family.

And do not worry - in Finland almost everyone speaks at least some English. Warmly welcome to Finland and Vaasa!

    Mirja Aromaa
