Virginia Marriage records mismatch father and mother of bride or groom

Ida McClee Female 1880 – Deceased •G41J-6CC Is a prime example of what frequently happens with Virginia Marriage records. One set of parents will be correctly matched but the other will have the father placed by the mother and the mother by the father with no discernable way to correct that. So you cannot correctly attach the record to all the people on it. I have tried to drag and drop but there are no black arrows to the left of the name that allow that. I've even tried going to the right side and changing alignment from there. Doesn't work. Please help.

You'll need to make copious use of the "Change" drop-downs on both sides, but Source Linker can be convinced to attach the correct records to the correct people.

First, use the Unfinished Attachments or Review Attachments link to go to Source Linker for the index entry (https://www.familysearch.org/search/linker?pal=/ark:/61903/1:1:68FP-FS4R&id=G41J-6CC) and use the left-hand (record-side) Change drop-down to switch to the person whose parents haven't been attached yet.

On the resulting view -- where the parents are mis-matched -- copy the PID of one of the parents in the right-hand (profile-side) column. Then, use the left-hand Change box to switch to the corresponding indexed parent.

The next screen will look all wrong, with people matched up Really Strangely, and black warning triangles and whatnot. Don't panic. Ignore all of that and click the right-hand Change button, paste the ID you just copied into the box, and click the "Go" arrow.

You now have Compare arrows between the correct people and can attach the index entries to the correct parents.

From the posted images, it looks like the problem arises when the Source Linker is not given enough clues as to who is who in the parents. In the above example parents have grey icons, not pink or blue, and both parents have the same last name. Then it has to try and deal with first name variants. Looks like the Source Linker just gives up and lists the parents on the record alphabetically by first name.
