1870 US Census: An example of a family being recorded twice
These are dated 5 months apart. They're both 1870 census but were recorded during different census takings. Is that the right language? I'm not sure what to call a supplemental recording.

The 1870 census was problematic. First census taken after the Civil War; many areas were enumerated poorly.
Three major cities were re-done, a few months later: Philadelphia, Manhattan, and Indianapolis.

BTW - Manhattan also complained about the enumeration in 1890, but the Federal Govt refused to re-take it. Manhattan decided to take their own, and I'm so glad they did, since the 1890 Federal was largely lost to fire and subsequent water damage. Manhattan is one of the few places with an extant 1890. When FamilySearch indexed it a few years ago, I did over 18,000 names.
