These typed forms are from the cape ring book baptisms. The catalog is here https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/968412?availability=Family%20History%20Library When you get a batch with one of these typed forms, go to the menu where it says batch. Click on it and then click on the about batch from dropdown menu. Look at the first 9 digit number shown against image name, before the underscore. It is the film number. Compare that number to the highlighted numbers in this image. If it matches, you can confidently say it is a baptism.

The exception to this is the film at top of this image: 8120994 the first 225 images contain baptisms and marriages. They are a different style form as can be seen here https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSV8-8PGR?i=224&cat=968412 we worry about these when they start appearing, there is enough confuson already with the other ones.

@Harmon, James Bartlett the placename shown is the town where the church was, that the baptism was performed in

@gary_noble Yes, the batches are of baptisms, but, I thought that we decided in a conversation with @Mitch Mackrory above that the transcriber of the Baptism Register had inadvertently entered the Birth Date into the Baptism Register, not the Baptism Date? So, since then I have been entering the Birth Date. What to do?

I had a batch yesterday that at least one of the dates WAS A BIRTH DATE. NO QUESTION. An older person. I will continue to enter them as Birth dates. I assume they did that on purpose because Birth dates are far more important than the other.

I really dont know how else to explain these any clearer? They are baptism indexes, but they were composed by extracting the birth dates from the baptism registers so:

    Record type = Baptism

Date on index = Birth date

Enter date from index in the Birth fields

Blank using <ctrl B> the baptism date fields

@gary_noble, I believe the question not answered above is where to put the location. Is it the birth or baptism location? Many thanks for your help with this!

@Mitch Mackrory The placename mentioned on the typed form is the where the baptism took place. There is only one field for the location to be entered on the baptism template, it doesn't ask to differentiate whether its the birthplace or baptism place?

Hallo Gary and Mitch, I assume that you are referring to this 'baptism place' when you do indexing or reviewing?

Can I suggest that when you see Kaapstad (Cape Town in English) for instance, or any other town names which are located in South Africa, that you type "Kaapstad, South Africa" in. There are many Town names that are the same names which are being used everywhere in the world. Remember, the settlers came from all over the European countries to South Africa. After they have settled in SA, they have given these names to a lot of streets and countries. A good example is the town Auckland. There is an town with the same name "Auckland" in New Zealand as well and if I look further, I might find the same town in England too.

Part of the reason for the batches that comes back to be reviewed, is because only "Kaapstad" is typed in by the indexer. It should have the country name included.

    Regards

    Hester

Someone already told us NOT to do that.

Correct. We never add information that is not on the document. Thus, IF South Africa is not written or typeset on the document, then it would not be indexed. That is why South Africa does not show up on any of the indexed examples. Also the field help only has locations listed up to the Province level, so it is doubtful that country would ever be indexed; Either they don't want the country listed, or it is a rare occurrence on any of these documents.

Field Help: The following is a list of levels of locality from smallest to largest:

    • Town
    • City
    • Parish
    • District
    • Province

Everyone must follow the same project instructions or these get held up in review. If a reviewer enters South Africa when it is not on the image, that is an error on the reviewer's part.

@Melissa S Himes South Africa is being added to the records in an attempt to at least keep the record in the country when the placename standardiser gets hold of it. Here is a sample of South African towns and what happens when the country is left off. Which is worse - the indexer/reviewer adding the country, or FS turning it into nonsense?

@gary_noble If the owners of the records want South Africa added, then they need to put that on the examples and in the project instructions. This is not only a problem with South Africa's records, it happens with every country. But, you cannot make up project instructions just because you don't agree with the current ones; Not everyone is a member of this community or your special facebook page - so they would not be adding the country. So, yes, it is worse not to follow the project instructions, field helps, and examples for each project.
