Hi, just wondering how to index a person who only has "Bishop of Tasmania" in the name column on Australia, Albany - Inwards Passenger Lists (right hand side of image, 3rd from the top). Thanks!

We were told to index the Bishop of Tasmania in the Surname field and mark the Given name field blank.

Thanks for asking. This was a real puzzle!

That is a new answer for an old question and should have a Help Center article created to address the use of a title as a surname in the absence of given/sur names. Generally, when no name is recorded, we would mark the given and surname fields blank. If there is no space for terms and titles, Bishop of Tasmania would have been ignored. I just did a search and there are now two records when you search Bishop of Tasmania (although the title was Right Reverend Bishop of Tasmania).

This is a really important development especially for older records where they use titles instead of names. For example, when a records says "Frances Seymour, daughter of the Earl of Essex, died 24 April 1674", shall we index the Earl of Essex as the father's surname? Or would this "rule" only apply when the primary is listed as the "Earl of Essex" or the "Bishop of Tasmania"?
