Event Place Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Event Place (Original) Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England

    Registration District Derby, West

    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQGF-DQQ

Event Place Toxteth Park St Michael, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Event Place (Original) St Michael, Lancashire, England

    Registration District Preston

The first record is correctly attributed to Toxteth Park, the second is wrongly attributed to Toxteth Park St Michael.

This type of error applies to many thousands of records, not just in this parish.

In all the records that I have examined there was sufficent information available in the record to correctly identify the place. The auto-selector needs to use this information otherwise it just misappropriates effort to repair the damage. While it remains as it is, it is more of a liability than an asset.

Collection Name: Norway Church Books, 1815-1930

Original Event Place: Stord, Valestrand, Hordaland, Norway

Incorrect Standard Applied: Valestrand Kyrkjegard, Stord, Hordaland, Norway

Correct Standard: Stord, Hordaland, Norway OR Valestrand, Hordaland, Norway depending on the section of microfilm it came from.

    Example: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68QH-MGJ9

Notes: The original place name does not make sense, it should be either Stord, Hordaland, Norway or Valestrand, Hordaland, Norway. I suspect the original film had sections for both parishes. The incorrect standard applied for this birth record, Valestrand Kyrkjegard, is Valestrand Cemetery.

"United States Public Records, 1970-2009", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KL4K-FVP : 30 September 2019), Marie Charles Domino, 02 Oct 2005-06 Aug 2008.

A portion of this is incorrect. This was my grandmother. So, it drives me insane to no end when i see that any record for the one surname that ive been researching since 1999, is wrong. Her last name was NOT Charles. Her last name was CHAS (her dad was from Spain). So idk how all this works exactly to fix. But any record found for Marie Chas born Sept 1 1925 is going to truly be Chas or Chas Domino... She married a Domino. So, no Charles, also no Chase, only Chas.

Collection Name: Norway Church Books, 1815-1930

Original Death or Burial Place: Strandebarm, Varaldsøy, Hordaland, Norge

Death or Burial Place: Varaldsøy Gamle Kirkegård, Strandebarm, Hordaland, Norge

Correct Death or Burial Place: Strandebarm, Hordaland, Norge

    Example: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68QH-L867?from=lynx1UIV8&treeref=LZ6L-X23

Note: This parish register covers the entire Prestgjeld (Clerical District or Parish) of Strandebarm which includes the Sogn (Parish or Local Parish) of Strandebarm, Jondal, and Varaldsøy, so the original event place is also incorrect in specifying one of the three sogn. The actual record has not information as to in which of the three the event took place.

There is no indication on any of the records as to which of the three churches or which of the various cemeteries (kirkegård) in Strandebarm prestegjeld the burial took place at. To declare that every single burial in this record took place at Varaldsøy Gamle Kirkegård is incorrect and introduces false information into people's records.

So many for Swedish exam books (I usually run across Varmland), FamilySearch should link it to the name of the book. This seems to be an issue with two-name parishes/towns. The first word is just the direction, and will likely auto populate to the wrong location. I don't know where you're getting that data from, but suggest allowing a space/additional word.

    Ex: Nedre Ullerud, Varmland

Event Place Original: "Nedre, Varmlands" in the source, but just adds Varmland, Sweden to the profiles (which is honestly better than the entirely different County that populates for Ostra Fagelvik).

    Volume: Ullerud

    Record Ex: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGRM-ZB98

    Ostra Fagelvik, Varmland

Shown as "Ostra", and populates as Ostra, Sodermanland, Sweden.

    Volume: Fagelvik

Record Ex (I switched it for the main person, to ostra fagelvik): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGRM-DV8F

Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

Christening Place: Hoe, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom

Christening Place (Original): Stockton, Norfolk, England

    Correct Standard: Stockton, Norfolk, England

    Example: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:CN3C-QSN2?from=lynx1UIV8&treeref=L8QV-PHL

Yet another example of a correctly standardised placename being changed to an incorrect place (not even in standard format for 1711 - i.e. not only changed to wrong parish name, but United Kingdom suffix added in error, too).

    (1) Has anyone explained why these errors have taken occurred?

    (2) Is there an exercise taking place to put examples like this back to showing their correct, original places?

Collection name: Ireland Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958

ALL of the records for the Ballycastle Registration district are credited to the wrong county.

Correct placename for registration district: Ballycastle, County ANTRIM, Ireland

Placename as listed: Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland. (Ballycastle, County Mayo is in Killala Registration District).

We are moving this to the support that is best able to help you. We deal with records before and during indexing but have nothing to do with them after they are indexed.

    • Ohio Death Index, 1908-1932, 1938-1944, and 1958-2007 7.6 million records
    • Affected: Places of death throughout Ohio (e.g. city, county, Ohio)
    • Incorrect Standard Applied: subsets of this collection were intermediately erroneously indexed as (county, county, Ohio) (e.g. Hamilton, Hamilton, Ohio - which doesn't exist, then the auto place-matcher resolved to Hamilton, Hamilton, Iowa - best match, but WRONG STATE.
    • Correct Standard (if known and available): city, county, Ohio
    • Example URL: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKLT-X52  Hamilton, Hamilton, Iowa
    • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKKC-B4K  Hardin, Hardin, Iowa
    • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKK6-5VR  Lucas, Lucas, Iowa
    • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKKZ-CP2 Butler, Butler, Iowa
    • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VK2R-LX7   Carroll, Carroll, Iowa
    • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKK3-GFQ Shelby, Shelby, Iowa
    • Many other Ohio repeated-county death places may also be in error, but do not resolve to a different state (e.g. Highland, Highland, Ohio; Belmont, Belmont, Ohio; Ashland, Ashland, Ohio; Marion, Marion, Ohio; Lorain, Lorain, Ohio; Delaware, Delaware, Ohio; Defiance, Defiance, Ohio are all legitimate Ohio localities, but may not actually be the place of death.
    • This systematic place-indexing error has affected many hundreds of thousands of Ohio Death Records in this collection.

    @N Tychonievich

I know you asked for a separate post for each place name standardization issue, but there are several mentioned in this thread. Perhaps you can report these? Thanks.

@Áine Ní Donnghaile I've asked an admin to split these comments into separate discussions so I can better keep track of what has been reported. Hopefully that will happen soon. And, yes, we'll get the issues reported to engineering.
