why do I get multiple birth dates when I specify and exact birth year

Do you mean in Search - Records? The now-well-hidden "exact" boxes don't apply to dates, and the new-and-disimproved search interface appears to have greatly reduced the weight or ranking of dates, so that it behaves, at best, like it is taking that input vaguely under advisement. Unfortunately, I don't know a way around this fault, because the date filters only go down to decades.
