Boston Tax Records - how to determine the year - [Part G] [M3CG-MSP]

I have found that the tax records, on the right hand side, have a column for "****'d 1868 Page." [Assessed 1868 Page]. In this column they put the page number where the the tax payer was listed on the previous year.

This helps to know that the current record is of the year 1869. This is very helpful to indexes to know the year of the current record. I do not know if all the Boston tax records have that column.

Sincerely yours,

David Putnam Jr.

    @DavidPutnamJr1

    Thank you for your information on the dates for the Boston Tax records. We have moved your suggestion to the Indexing Category as a discussion instead of a question.

    Thank you for helping Index. That helps so many find records about their ancestors.

    Not all Boston Tax records have that column. Some pages have the year clearly marked in large numbers at the top of the page. But most of the ones I've seen, don't have any year noted.

    I wouldn't use that date anyway because it would be "calculating" a date to enter 1869. We are not supposed to do calculations in indexing.
