I have been doing a lot of directory listings and most do not give the city of the listings. However, within the page there is often a city name. For example, John Doe - Cincinnati Hospital. Should I assume all the names are for Cincinnati and use that at the Directory Place or leave it blank?

If the city does not appear at the top such as "Detroit City Directory" or " Las Angeles Directory",etc. the city name should be left blank. Also in indexing include business names along with the regular population names.

If there is no city directory name better leave the field blank.

Sometimes the business add were located in other cities and just paid to advertise in this directory listing.

To clarify about business names: ie: Barnes & Jones Bakery, make a separate entry for Barnes(surname) and Jones (surname) Blank for both for given names.

Yes, you would create 2 entries for that business name just as you indicated; Barnes for the Surname, Given Names is Blank, and the Jones for the Surname, Given Names is Blank.

In the Project Instructions under What to Remember about This Project, the 5th bullet point tells us:

    • Index names of employers and employees. When indexing business names, index the names of individuals only. For example, "The Ad Book" would not be indexed, but "Barner Kehlenbeck Wines and Liquors" should be indexed. In this case, you would create 2 entries: one for Barner (surname) and another for Kehlenbeck (surname). Do not index occupations or terms such as "banker," "policeman," "M.D.," or similar terms.

Thank you for being willing to index these large and interesting records.
