Is there a project for digitizing books?

We were advised that once qualifying microfilms had been digitized, then work would begin on FamilySearch's microfiche collection.

After reading the post at https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/93525/digitize-register-of-the-east-india-office-records#latest I wondered whether there is / will be a project for digitizing books. There seems to be no reason why that particular item should not be digitized, so is there any benefit in patrons making such requests, or can somebody advise the current position with the general issue (of book digitization)?
