Help Finding a Grandfather
Hi - I have been searching form my 2nd great grandfather for many years. I determined years ago that he must be a foundling but hope springs eternal. His name is Hugh McLean and from the 1841 Scotland Census he was born between 1822 and 1826 in Lanarkshire; coal miner in Shettleston. His death record, signed by his son, William Gilmour McLean, states Hugh's parents were unknown. I have found some couples that would fit as his parents but no actual proof. If anyone has suggestions, I would welcome them.

Hello Isabelle
I too searched for many years for unknown grandparents who appeared to disappear
completely. Recent DNA test has provided me with a few strong connections
which am now investigating. I had exhausted Scotlands People yet the DNA gave me
new directions. Another place are Mitchell Library Archives and History Depts
Hope this may be of interest . All the best

Thank you for your help. I have often thought of finding a home for unwed mothers in the Glasgow area for 1822-26.

It is pretty tricky finding those records for those who were not wed. I do hope you find answers. 😊

As someone else has suggested, the records at Glasgow City Archives in the Mitchell Library would be a good place to look, in particular the Poor Law Applications https://www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Poor-Law.aspx
If he died in the poorhouse, or the death certificate was signed by an inspector of the poor or similar, there is a reasonable chance that a record may survive in that collection. Some of these records are also available on FamilySearch, although they are not indexed. Go to the FamilySearch Catalog and use keywords like "Glasgow" and "Poor", making sure you select the "Availability Online" option in the left hand side menu, to see exactly what records you can view on FamilySearch.
A computerised index to the applications for Glasgow, Govan, and Barony (plus some smaller Lanarkshire parishes) is available in the Archives and sometime in the (hopefully) near future this will be placed online.
