Finnish surnames Lappalain and Lappalainen are exactly same name. Lappalain is just an old way to write it. Surnames with ending -nen usually were shortened and last "en" were left out and many times "i" was added to the shortened name

 

My surname Kuosmanen had also different ways to write it, eg. Cuosmain and Kuosmain (notice the extra i).

 

Make sure that you save all name variations into the Alternate Name under Other Information.
