Help with Medan, Sumatra Utara, Indonesia?

I am trying to help a new member with her family history. She is from Medan, Sumatra Utara, Indonesia. I don't have any experience with this area. Can anyone give me some pointers of how to find information to help her? Sincerely, Carrie T

Hi, My Family is from North Sumatra and my mom lives in Medan. Since Indonesia have diversity of its own with thousand of islands and more than 300 tribes and languages, the city of Medan also diverse. But the main tribes who live in that city mostly are Batak tribes. Batak tribes keeps their ancestors history and information very carefully and crucial. So if your friend or family is part of the Batak tribe she should have the family name and the information of family hometown, and it will be much more easier to get the information. It really depends on what ethnicity she is. Is she tribal local Indonesian? Does she have Chinese ancestors?
