William and David Dickson
Dickson Butte in Humboldt county California is named for these brothers who died here on elk ridge "at the same place" 9 years apart in 1878 and 1887. Their gravestone in garberville ca about 10 miles south is interesting. It says "David Dickson -native of Wetreisk Forfarshire Scotland - died at Elk Ridge" and below that "William Dickson - brother of David- died at the same place. They bought this land from a man named Garcia who was the first non Indian settler in garberville. The tip top only of this Holy mountain can be seen from the gravestone. I tried to look up these guys years ago and I recall they had been gold miners possibly, before coming to Humboldt County. I also recall reading one of their obituaries. I think a tree fell on him... I was just looking up their genealogy and they may be the sons of George Dickson and Jean Patterson, William christened in Kirriemuir may 9 1823 and David Sept 4 1828. Wetreisk may be 7 miles west of kirriemuir in Lintrathen Parish near Loch Lintrathen but I'm not sure. Not much comes up on the computer about Wetreisk. Anyway if anyone knows anything about any of these folks who came to California or any of their relatives, or where they came from, please let me know. It looks like they had more siblings but I don't know for sure if that's the right family. Thank you!
