I need help trying to decipher the first name below which was found on the Irish Civil Register of Deaths. Thanks for any help that you might be able to offer.

I think it says "Kirk", or "Kerk". The given name is Michael. He was the Son of the deceased, present at the death. I can't make out his residence except that it starts with K.

Borady OR Bovady Or replace the a with 2 e or possibly a u - I did not try to look up any such locations but I find logainm.ie helpful when trying to pin down a location.

I agree with @John Curran - if you can post a link or provide location/date information for the record it might be helpful to review the rest of the page.

Creating what is termed a letter map would be useful. This is a document you make on excel or similar. Create an alphabet then below each letter copy and paste known letters from the document using snipping tool or similar, and paste the letters (upper and lower case) below . You then compare this against the document itself and you theoretically should be able to create a good transript of the document. Different parts of the same document MAY have different forms of the same letter depending on the scribe.

Practice makes perfect.. Beware what I did. I once spent hours trying to decipher this one letter that was key to the document and couldnt get it. It was only after a frustrating few hours I realised I had "snipped" the tail of a letter from the line above above and when I saw that the letter was actually very easy to decipher. Paleograhy- an art form.

By the way - is that townland Boveedy, County (London)Derry?
