SS Application and Claims database
I have several questions about information I have found about my grandparents in this data base. The first is for my grandmother, listed as Nettie Dettmen Katarsk born 27 Feb 1886 The entry for her says shes submitted information (and I am assuming it is for an SS application) in Sept 1938. If she was going for a SS number, I know she never worked for an employer, so why did/should she apply for one? The reference number in her entry is 66152570419. The parent information is correct; her location was Chicago. For additional info, she died in 1955.
To compound the issue, her husband, Stanley Joseph Katarski, I know he died in January 1937. There is an entry for him in this same data base that is extremely confusing. It says he was born 8 Mar 1886 which is correct . It also says there was a submission on 30 June 1978, that there was a claim on 10 Oct 1938, that it was a life claim. The reference no is 67078527830.
This is confusing because of his known death date relative to the other dates. Why would a life claim occur so far after his death, and what was being submitted for? I spent some time pondering the submission date, and know of no reason of what might be submitted so far past his death.
Is it possible in transcribing the information that errors have been made? Is it possible to get a copy of the document originally submitted? If so, where is the information on how to do that? As you can see, the information really doesn't make sense based on the his death (I have his death certificate).
As part of this, since it is likely my grandfather paid little or nothing into the SS system, would he or my grandmother be due any type of benefits? At my grandfather's death there were several minors in the family.
If you have no answers for this, is there someone/place I can go to look for someone who can?
Thank you for any assistance.

I'm curious where you picked up these reference numbers. I don't see them on the Ancestry database entries for your grandparents.

First, the 1978 is probably a transcription error because it is not uncommon for a 3 to be misread as a 7 if the handwriting isn't clear.
You may have already sorted this out but in case you have been unable to do so you should consider obtaining a copy of their SS Record. This can be done under the Freedom of Information Act and the Social Security Administration website provides guidance on the process. Here is the link to to the SSA FOIA page. https://www.ssa.gov/foia/
