How do I use this Danish parish probate index?
I'm trying to identify the probate record for Lars Mathiasen who died 18 September 1859 in Stubberup, Fakse Sohn, Præstø Amt, Denmark. I can't seem to figure out where the parish probate index from 1852-1860 is intending to direct me (see #263 in right column).
When I look around page 263 in the volume from 1852-1860, the cases are from 1854 (5 years before he died) and the same page in the volume from 1860-1877 presents cases from 1866 which don't seem to relate to Lars at all.
Since Lars is listed under 1859 in the index, I assume "263" is probably supposed to refer to the 263rd case for 1859 rather than page 263 but I can't seem to figure out how the case numbers are indicated in the probate minutes.

I took a look and didn't have better luck than you did. Typically the numbers apply to pages and there's definitely not something for Lars Mathiasen on page 263. I'm thinking that perhaps the page number is incorrect or something of that sort.
What is your research goal? I'm wondering if there might another way to find out what you're hoping to learn.

@Jeniann Nielsen, thanks for the reply! Initially, I was looking for more concrete evidence that I had correctly identified Lars as the father of Hans Larsen, who married Julie Dorthea Jensen in Copenhagen on 21 Jun 1864. I thought the probate record may identify the names/residences of Lars' heirs, but now I think that I may have accomplished my original goal in another way.
Hans Larsen's 1870 and 1880 census records indicate he was born in Stubberup, Præstø Amt around 1834-1836 but died in 1882 before the Danish census began collecting more specific birth information. Predictably, there were several Hans Larsens entered in the Fakse parish baptism register around that time. However, I managed to eliminate several of them by finding marriage, census, and death records which showed they were not the same Hans I was looking for.
Military draft registration documents show that Hans, son of Lars Mathiasen, moved several times (#533, #119, #1054, #1723) and ended up in Copenhagen by 1861, making it plausible that he was the same Hans from the 1864 marriage record above.
Lars' son, Ole Frederick, also moved to Copenhagen and married Karen Sophie Jensen in 1865 (as supported by his 1870, 1880, & 1890 census records. Ole and/or his wife served as sponsors for the baptisms of some of Hans' children (specifically Camille, Dagmar, & Valdemar). The address listed for Ole in Valdemar's baptism record matches his residence in the 1880 census. Hans and his wife served in a similar capacity at the baptism of several of Ole's children (Laurine and twins Oluf & Sophus). Peder, another son of Lars is also mentioned on the baptism of the twins.
While I'm still new to Nordic genealogy records, that seems to satisfy my need for reasonable confirmation that I found the right Hans. I still would like to find Lars' probate record and learn more about what is going on with the probate index. All of the records from 1859 are handled differently than the ones from previous years. If you're interested, I wrote a little more about my observations of the probate index in a post on the Reddit thread about genealogy.

@tyams , glad you found what you were looking for! Copenhagen does get a bit trickier at times, but it looks like you've looked at sufficient records to confirm the information you needed.
