Time period of the extracted names in Oulu County, Finland
My grandparents were born in Finland in Oulu county. They immigration to USA in the early 1900s.
I am gathering the names of families in Oulu County, specifically Kärsämäki and Haapavesi parishes, also Kuhmo and Sotkamo parishes. What records were used for the extraction program and the time period. I know birth records were extracted, but were they original records or the copied records? Were marriage records extracted and sealings done? I have found that births after 1850 are in need of temple work, so the records extracted and time periods would be helpful as I try to find out if I am doing duplicate temple work or not. Thank you for your help.

Between years 1920-1940 Finnish Genealogical Society hand copied almost all history books of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Those copied books are called as Black Books and they contain records from the beginning of the records to about mid 1800 (about end of 1600 -1850). This was done because of the not so good condition of the original history books.
Then during years 1949-1955 Utah Genealogical Society microfilmed almost all church records, court records, census and military records among all. Extraction project was not done from original birth/christening and marriage records but it was done from those Black Books.
Because you are doing Finnish family history research, I believe that you know Hiski project. Also Hiski is mainly done from those Black Books. That's why it is very important to always verify all that information what you have gotten from name extraction or Hiski projects, from original records (they are digitized).
Extraction project which was used to gather names to the temple was done from christening records (some times also birth information was also extracted). In some areas, mainly eastern and south eastern parts of Finland) marriage records were also extracted and sealings done. First extraction project mainly covered years 1650-1850. Then later in some areas extraction project was continued until year 1880.
There are some parishes which were NOT part of the extraction project and Kuhmo and Sotkamo belong to those parishes. There are couple members who have done lots of work in Kuhmo and Sotkamo areas.
Otherwise you should always expect that the person's christening record was extracted if it can be found from the birth/christening records about before 1850. Thus it is important to add also christening information into the Family Tree and use names, both to the child and parents, which are used in birth/christening record.

Thank you for the information. I had understood that all of Oulu County was part of the extraction program, but I will check carefully for the Kuhmo and Sotkamo parishes. This is where my grandfather came from and my mother did temple work in the 1970 for our direct line ancestors.

Yes, most of the Oulu county and Finland was part of the extraction program but there are those exceptions. We might be distant relatives, I have ancestors from both of those parishes.
