Is the addition of "in" to a surname for a woman sometimes accompanied by an umlaut?

Specifically for the surname Hofmann, could it be changed to Hofmännin?

Thank you.

    Hi @NelsonPhilipFord1

The last name Hofmann almost never has the ä (I've never seen it with it). My guess (without seeing the record you're getting this from) is that there isn't an umlaut, but that it just looks like it (this can sometimes happen when lines are written close to each other).

    Good luck!
