I am searching for the birth name of Lydia Maria Marcy or Maria Lydia Marcy b.15 April 1814 New York
On the census records, she is known as Lydia M., but in the North American Family Histories for the Marcy Family, she is listed as Maria L. Her death record says Lydia Platner. She was md. to George H. Platner. Her father, Simeon Marcy 1770-1853 was a Dr. & I am hoping that he kept records that will give her birth name. I am also searching for their marriage record 25 July 1833 NY was stated by a cousin but with no source. Can someone pls help me with these questions?
Thank you very much, Carolyn

I would recommend starting with Guided Research at https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/GuidedResearch:New_York and https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/GuidedResearch:Illinois.

Thank you Ben for your suggestions. In searching both for Lydia or Maria Marcy in 1814, I was not successful. Do you have time to help me with further searches? I am hoping that because her father was a Dr., there might have been records kept by him? Thank you, Carolyn

There is a family tree for her on MyHeritage, Are you able to access that? The person who maintains the tree is Stacy Rae Benson whom you could contact. Otherwise I didn't have much luck. What I found on Ancestry you probably have, too.

You won't find a birth record for Lydia in New York, they weren't kept until the 1880s. They weren't keeping marriage record until the 1880s either. It is possible there is a church record out there somewhere, but you would need a specific location first.
You could try looking for a probate record for her father, this may list her name. The death certificate of her son Harrison may also list her name.

Hi Ben, I wrote Stacey Benson a couple of weeks ago, but replied that she did not have information for the marriage date & place for Lydia & George Platner. Thanks for much for trying!

Thank you for the info on New York record keeping. Yes, I would need a more specific location for finding the Church record, I don't know if I can find that through the Platner's or not. I haven't tried the probate record yet or the death certificate of her son. Her own death certificate has
"Lydia M. Platner" but Ancestry.com does not have an image, so I don't know who reported her death. I have not been able to determine when the Marcy Family information was compiled in the book, "The North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000". In the book, she is listed as Maria L. Marcy, but in the Census she is known as Lydia M. Which is the earliest source? Thank you, Carolyn

In earlier time periods like this, people frequently went by a variety of names and spellings. Names were not so set in stone as they are today. I've even seen multiple names and spellings of the same person within the same document. So I wouldn't worry too much whether her name was Lydia Maria or Maria Lydia, you will likely never know for certain in this case. As long as you are certain the records about her are all the same person, that is the most important part. Also, that you are confident that her parents, spouse, and children can be proven to be hers from original documents.

I just found what I think is Simeon Marcy's probate record. In it he states that Sarah Marcy is his wife, and that Maria Platner is his daughter. That goes alongwith the Marcy history and not the census or death record. I am still looking for the son's death certificate & obit. Yes, I'm sure she is the same whether Maria L. or Lydia M. Thank you again, I appreciate the help. Carolyn

Here's where the book begins: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/61157/46155_b290024-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=46155_b290024-00000

Yes, I found the book. I was just wondering when the history was published. But, since it also lists "Maria L.'s" death date, I can't use it as an earlier source to sort out her name. I have not found a death certificate or orbit for son Harrison. These are the dates with her names:
1853 Father Simeon's will says Maria
1855 Census Lydia
1860 Census Lydia
1865 Caroline's marriage says Maria
1870 Census Lydia
1880 Census Lydia
Marcy Family History - Maria
Death Certificate 1890 - Lydia
I guess I'll just call her Lydia Maria or Maria Lydia Marcy
Thank you for your help! Carolyn
