ANSWERED: Civil Marriage translation help
I have made my best guesses on the important information from the attached Belmonte-DeMarco marriage civil record. Would someone be so kind as to check and correct my poor translation? Thanks
- Marriage Date: 15 April 1888
- Marriage Place: San Cosmo
- Groom's Name: Belmonte, Emannuele Salvatore,
- Groom's Occupation: shoemaker
- Groom's birthplace: San Cosmo
- Groom: resident of the same town
- Groom's Age: 30
- Groom's father's name: ????
- Groom's father: resident of ?????
- Groom's mother's name: Belmonte, Carmela
- Groom's mother: resident of same town (San Cosmo)
- Bride's name: DeMario, Carmela
- Bride's occupation: peasant???
- Bride's age: 23
- Bride birthplace: San Cosmo
- Bride resident of: same town (San Cosmo)
- Bride's father's name: Annunniate ???(spelling??)
- Bride's father resident of: same town (San Cosmo)
- Bride's mother's name: Cofone Maria or Maria Cofone or Cosone Marie ??? spelling and also which is first and middle or is one a maiden name?
- Bride's mother resident of: same town
- First Witness: Cosmo Bua?? age: 30
- First Witness occupation: tailor
- Second witness: Gradusio?? Bua? Age 25???

Anything else of importance that I missed??
The signature at the end is “Salvatore Emannule Belmonte” so is Emammuele the middle or first name? In later documentation he seems to never use Emannuele...

Hugh,
Your translation looks good to me but I am not an expert by any means. Hopefully you will get a confirmation from one of our experts shortly.

8 - Groom's father is deceased Michelangelo
17 - Bride's father is Annunziato
19 - Bride's mother is Maria (given) Cofone (surname)
23 - Second witness is Francesco Bua, colono (settler - probably means he might sharecrop but hard to say)
Italians don't have "middle names" to speak of. They have given names and a surname, and sometimes a sopranome (family nickname of sorts). His proper given name might have been Salvatore but you'd need to see his birth record; he might have gone familiarly by Emanuele.

Thankyou so much!!!
What is the word or abbreviation before Groom's father's name Michelangelo? Apparently it mean deceased...?
Ah now I understand edi = and of, thanks
FYI as far as Salvatore Belmonte's name, 99% of US documents only show Salvatore. Emannuele basically disappeared.
Thanks again 😊😊😊

BTW, How do I add "Accepted Answer" to the discussion?

It says del fu Michelangelo. fu = deceased, di =living.
