Help reading a Norwegian Death Record

Please help translate the death information for Johannes Olivius Olsen. It is record 18 on https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8862/85804/21.

I am interested in what is recorded in the name field. Looks like illegitimate ?? child and then his name and a whole bunch of info under his name. And do you know what he died from in column 9 Cause of Death? It looks like Diftherit? Then in column 12 the Remarks column, I think it is says something about dying at ????

I was interesting to me that this record says the family resided in Hemstadeie. Their local parish records are mostly found in the Stange Local Parish. And yet I've found this death record in a different local parish which is a few miles away in a different village. I am trying to trace all the places this family may have lived and was thinking that they might have moved to the Ottestad area. But this record states they were residing in Hemstadeie. Do you have any ideas why this record showed up in this parish?

The name field says: Uægte Hm.barn Johannes Olaus Olivius Olsen (Ikke meddelt oplysing om Faderens borgerlige stilling og Faders Navn.)

Translation: Illegitimate tenant farmer’s child Johannes Olaus Olivius Olsen (Not given information on father’s civil position or father’s name.)

So apparently when this record was first written down, the next column was left blank. It would be fascinating to see this original book or a color scan to see if the ink in the name field and the father’s information field looks different.

The father’s information field says: Husmd. Ole Johannessen Hemstadeie.

Next is his birth date, 1887 Sept 25.

Birthplace: Hemstadeie Saastadeie

Residence: Hemstadeie

Cause of death: Diftherit = Diphtheria

Notes: Døde paa amtssygehuset = Died at county hospital (modern Norwegian: Fylke Sykehuset)

You wrote that this family was residing in Hemstadeie. It would be more proper to say that they were renting Hemstadeie which would have been a tiny property that was part of the Hemstad farm (or maybe another farm but usually eie means a sub-parcel on the farm of the same main name.) Searching in this register for Ottestad local parish, which is part of Stange parish, I don’t find anyone born at Hemstad. The 1891 census has a lot of people residing at Hemstad in Stange but the census doesn’t say which local parish Hemstad was in. 

Going to the book for Stange local parish in Stange parish, there are a lot of people born at Hemstad.

So Johannes was not residing in Ottestad local parish when he died. He was living in Stange local parish at the small tenant farm Hemstadeie. My guess as to why he is in the Ottestad record is that that may have been where the hospital was.

You probably already have Johannes's birth record but just in case, and so others can see it, here it is: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060418010414 (entry 36). This shows that he was, as the corrected death record states, born at Saastadeie.

The family actually didn't move very far between his birth and his death. On this map you can see the marker at the main farm Såstad in Stange and not far to the northwest, it looks like a bit under 2 km or just about 1 mile, is Hemstad farm.

This looks like a pretty rural area. Other than the village of Stange itself, with a current population of about 3,000 (it would have been far less in the 1800), almost all the named spots you see on the map are just farms.

Thank you so much for this information. My Grandmother was also born at Hemstadeie and this man Ole Johannessen is her uncle. I have been trying to trace Ole Johannessen as he later immigrated to the United States and took the last name of Nordhagen. Long story short, Ole Johannessen had a stepson Ole Marinius Nordhagen that married my grandmother in Montana. We don't know why he chose or was assigned the name Nordhagen, whether it was after a farm that he had lived at or not. So I'm currently trying to find farms with a house or subdivision named Nordhagen on it on this Stange parish. This map is the best thing I've seen at laying out the subplots of farms. Is this map available for anyone? Do you have an URL that you can share? Again, thank you so much for taking the time to share your wealth of information.

The map website is run by the Norwegian government. It's really easy to use and very thorough. The one thing that can sometimes throw you off, however, is that it uses the current names of places and spelling has changes through the years. It is at: https://www.norgeskart.no

Nordhagen is going to be a very common name. Many farms have geographic names like this. Nord, of course is just North. Hagen means garden. Probably every parish is going to have at least one Hagen farm.
