Family Tree with People Who Aren't Relatives
What can I do about my family tree that has many people who aren't relatives erroneously put in as relatives? I don't want to offend whomever put the people there but there's no way that some could be relatives because the dates are completely wrong. Can I work on my tree privately or do we have to allow others to make erroneous changes. I've been working on this tree for over ten years.

Hi, you may find the information in this article from the FamilySearch Help Centre useful in understanding the nature of FamilySearch Family Tree which unlike other sites functions as one giant universal tree with all contributors allowed equal access What is the purpose of FamilySearch and Family Tree? you may find this article useful as we as others linked to it How can I prevent other people from making inaccurate changes to Family Tree? there is currently no way to have a ‘private tree’ in FamilySearch, although all living people added by yourself are confidential and only viewable by you.

We thank you for your message on wrong people in my account who aren't relatives. We totally understand. There is one more thing you can do but there is no guarantee the other party will respond and that is the message system. https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-use-familysearch-messages How do I use FamilySearch Messages?
Article Id: 8870, Published May 05, 2021FamilySearch Messages is a tool for communicating with people who have contributed information to Family Tree.
The initial message must be sent through the Send a Message option that you see when you click a contributor's name in Family Tree. Sending a message through Family Tree—or receiving a message—transfers the person's name to your contact list in Messages.
We hope this additional bit of information helps you in some way.

Your Questions:
.
What can I do about my family tree that has many people who aren't relatives erroneously put in as relatives?
Short Answer: Just KEEPING going in a fixing/addressing any problems/issues that you are aware of.
[ You may need to "Follow" some, we can "Follow" up to x4000 individuals/persons at any given time. ]
{ You can "Check" the "List" of those that you "Follow" on a 'Daily' basis - that what you keep on top of it ... }
.
Can I work on my tree privately or do we have to allow others to make erroneous changes?
[ I've been working on this tree for over ten years. ]
{ Many of us have been working on our "Ancestral" Lines far long than x10 Years ... }
Short Answer: 'NO', Unfortunately, NOT in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
.
And ...
Further to what 'Ian' and 'William' have already proffered ...
Most new (and, some old) Users/Patrons DO NOT understand the basic 'nature' and 'premise' of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', when they join in.
We do not have our OWN "Tree" in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
We ONLY have "Branches" (ie. Ancestral" lines), that are interconnected, in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us, that is "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is NOT like 'On-Line' "Websites" (eg. "Ancestry_com"; or "MyHeritage_com"; or, the like); and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes (eg, the OLD, now no longer supported, "PAF"; or, "Ancestral Quest"; or, the like).
We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' like other 'On-Line' "Websites"; and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes.
We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/persons in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
And, MOST importantly ...
In fact, we do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, OUR own "Deceased" Ancestors/Family/Relatives in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
.
Furthermore ...
Another option, if you do not already, would be maintain your "Ancestral" Lines, in your own Private/Personal 'Database(s)', on one of the many "Third Party" Applications that is "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
The "Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' can be found in the "Solutions Gallery" of 'FamilySearch'.
Here is a direct link to the "Solutions Gallery" of 'FamilySearch':
https://partners.familysearch.org/solutionsgallery/s/
And, here is the direct link to the "Family Tree Management programmes" themselves:
https://partners.familysearch.org/solutionsgallery/s/list?category=family_tree_management
"Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' include, BOTH, 'On-Line' "Websites" (eg. "Ancestry_com"; or "MyHeritage_com"; or, the like); and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes ("Ancestral Quest"; or, the like).
Some of the "Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' have, BOTH, a Basic FREE version; and/or, a Premium PIAD (ie. "Subscription") version, the latter just having more 'Bells and Whistles'. The Basic FREE version is sufficient for most, the average, User/Patron. Whereas, the Premium PAID (ie. "Subscription") version is the choice of most experienced and 'power' Users/Patrons.
You can use ONE or MORE than one, of the the "Third Party" Applications, the choice is yours.
Most of the "Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' that are "Family Tree Management programmes, have INTERFACES that work/connect (directly) with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' that can, "Download"; and, "Upload" (ie. "Transfer", both, Data; and, individuals/persons) between, the "Third Party" Application; and, "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
I know that this most probably does not help; but, I hope that is gives you some perspective; and, some idea on how to move forward.
Just my thoughts.
Brett

Another thing to remember is that just because you can find a record in Family Tree it does not mean you are related to that person. If you look at limited trees on other sites you can easily come to the belief that any record in the "tree" is a relative. That is not so with the common linked tree of Family Tree. Just because you can find and see a record does not mean you are related. That is why on each detail page there is a "View my Relationship" link that will provide information on a relationship if one exists.

If you as a patron or guest want to know if a deceased person is related to you within 15 generations, you press on the words view relationship with the ~ squiggly line in computer terms it is called a tilde. That will either show you the line of persons from you to the deceased person you are viewing if you are within 15 generations of that person OR if there is no connect the view will be blank.

If you find an individual you are certain has no relationship to the parents they appear listed against, on their Person page, just click on the "pencil" icon alongside their name. Then click on the "Remove or Replace" link. If you do not know / cannot find this person's correct parents, check the box reading, "I have reviewed the relationships, sources, and notes for these individuals", choose "Remove Parents", enter a reason statement for your action, (e.g., "No relationship to this family branch") and, finally, click on "Remove". This will leave the individual orphaned on Family Tree, but still there for another user to find and add to the correct parents / family branch, at some future time.
