i need help with finding my grandfather on my father's side.
I am hoping that someone could help me. I have a block on my grandfather on my fathers side. i have asked all sort of question's. the name of my grandfather, my father gave me does not match the family i have DNA matches with that would most likely be matched to my father's father. I can not do the y-DNA test because i am female not male. I have looked at all the ancestry sites, ancestry.com, familyhistory.com, my heritage.com, 23andme.com and I am at a standstill. can any one help or have any suggestions?

Do you see a family overlap in the DNA matches that you have? I mean, are you able to sort the DNA matches into family groups, such as 'these are all descended from John Willson b. 1850'? If so, then you can build a tree and see how all of them are related, and compare to your family. Are you the only person of your family who has done a DNA test? If so, it would be valuable to have your father, and his siblings test or some of your cousins. A single person matching could be in error, but if several members of your family also match the same alternate family, it is much more certain to be a true match. Especially, if those family members have tested at different times or with different companies. One thing to be aware of as you consider possible alternate ancestors, is that there has to be a physical crossing, the possible ancestor must have been in the same location as the partner (known) ancestor. So if the DNA matches all descend from someone who was living in Massachusetts, and your family has always been in California...that doesn't work. Does that make sense?

If you have tested on AncestryDNA I would be glad to look at your DNA matches to see if I can figure out your grandfather's family, if you are willing to share DNA results with me. You can message me at bryajw2@hotmail.com if you want my help.

Have you been able to organize your matches into at least 3 main groups? What I mean is:
- Those matches that match through your mother. Obviously anyone in your matches that also match known maternal relatives won't be considered in this problem.
- Then the group of people who match with your dad's mother. You should be able to identify them. And again anyone who matches here won't be considered any further.
- That leaves all the rest - they don't match your mother's matches nor your dad's mother's matches. This should be the group of your dad's father's relatives.
As noted above work through them starting with the one that is your closest match look for common ancestral lines, etc.
Good luck.
