Hello, thank you so much for accepting me into the group.
I am trying to find a death record, marriage record or any children of my great-grand uncle Giuseppe SanFilippo who was born 1872 in Leonforte, Sicily.
I have letters from Giuseppe SanFilippo that he wrote to his brother Salvatore Samuel SanFilippo from Brazil in 1917. I am wondering if Giuseppe remained in Brazil the rest of his life or if he returned to Sicily where he was born.
Giuseppe SanFilippo’s address in 1917 was:
Estado do Rio Grande do Sul Travessa Itaperu N7a and 9 Porto Alegre, Brasil

Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

Hello Adam
I have done a little research in the south of Brazil, and I have friends there who have work in Italian genealogy in Brazil specifically, some even professional. Knowing that he had an address in Porto Alegre, is helpful. Do you have an idea of how old he was at the time of the letters? Did he have a family? Census in Brazil do not provide the same information as here, so your best bet will be Civil and religious records, maybe military records, and immigration records. I found one of my sister-in-law's ancestor record arriving in Brazil by reading ship logs, but we knew the year he arrived.
If you need help from someone professionally, I have a friend to recommend. If what you need is volunteer help, we can reach to people on the Brazil Wiki pages, maybe a TFH consultant at a Portuguese Speaking ward, and see if there's anyone there that could help you. Eventually, we may have enough people here that we can help each other more.
Some ideas:
- Look online for the churches near that address (Google, Google Maps, Google Earth, etc)
- Find out which Civil records (Cartorio Civil) they have in the city
- https://registrocivil.org.br/ if an official site where you can order digital official copies of birth, death, and marriage certificate, but you need all information pertaining to the doc (In Portuguese)
- Once you have help with Portuguese, assuming you don't speak the language, you should venture into looking at the images for the church records in the time frame and locality you have. Once you found one, it may become easier to find others.
Best,

@Adriana Grande Thank you so much for helping. Giuseppe SanFilippo was born 7 SEP 1872 in Leonforte, Sicily. The letter he wrote to his brother Salvatore in Chicago was dated 1917. So in 1917 he was 45 years old at the time. I have no idea when he passed away or in what country.

Have you seen this?
Sounds a lot like it could be the same person. It has the record of his marriage in Italy and a son name Salvatore. I saw about immigrants arriving in Porto Alegre. I'll take a look at it, it only has 72 pages.

Thank you. I really appreciate your help, but the mother my Giuseppe SanFilippo was Giuseppina / Giuseppa Josephine Passarello
Birth 29 APR 1843 Leonforte, Enna, Sicilia, Italy
Death 10 DEC 1893 Leonforte, Enna, Sicilia, Italy

It appears that in the record you sent that Giuseppe SanFilippo's mother was Cristina Marchica.
Also my Giuseppe SanFilippo was born in Leonforte in 1872.
Regards,
Adam
