Gutierrez and Monrroy
Hi all – I’m new to the group. I’ve been researching my ancestry on and off for the last decade. I believe I got to a point in my search where I’ve hit dead ends in most corners due to lack of records when you go beyond the early 1800s. However, that is why I’m turning to this group for help – perhaps the collective experience can help me continue this search!
Here are some findings/questions I’m looking to solve:
• It appears most of the family that I have found in the Gutierrez line is from San Germain, Puerto Rico
o May 29 1899 marriage between Ramon Gutierrez y Monrroy (sometimes spelled Monroy) and Rosa Leon y Guzman – these two are the last two in my line with searchable records that I know of. I am able to find both sets of parents from the marriage document, but that is pretty much where my search ends.
o Ramon Gutierrez parents are Eduardo Gutierrez and Maria Isidra Monrroy
o Rosa Leon’s parents are Francisco Leon and Victoria Guzman
o Legend has it, the Gutierrez line comes from Spain. I am not sure about Monrroy, Leon, and Guzman
• I would like to learn more about both sets of parents – birth, death, where they were born, etc.
• I would also like to learn more about their ancestry – who were their parents and when did the family come from Europa (or not at all) to Puerto Rico?
Thank you so much and looking forward to collaborating!

Hi Mark,
I've been looking at your family and I haven't found anything more than you did, except that Rosa's parents were Francisco Leon Segarra and Victoria Guzman Jimenez ( it appears in their children's records).
It's frustrating researching this area of the island because of some Church and government limitations imposed to this area.
If after the pandemic is over you can go to a Family History Library near you, you may be able to find more.
Here are the catalog entries for San German: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=182795&query=+place:"Puerto Rico, San Germán"
I the Monnroig/came from from Catalonia, but I'm not sure what the original last name is. It could
also be Monroy or Monroe. I hoped to find more because the names are not common, but I came out
with nothing.

There are a lot of Gutierrez in Arecibo and Isabela too. Here's the entry for Catalogo de Emigrantes S. XIX
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSZC-BSL8-H?i=177&cat=232930
This specific time, early 1800 isn't well documented yet.
There is another Monroy Leon family in Camuy (Ignacio Monroy Delgado m. Maria Leon Rodriguez) that are from San Miguel de Abona, Islas Canarias.
There is also a Francisco Gutierrez Rosado c. 1865 in Anasco.

Thank you so much. At the FHL, I would be able to flip through catalog entries in San German that have yet to be digitized or indexed?
I did find a birth record for Santos Puente y Acosta (Puerto Rico - the maternal side of the family). Do you happen to know anyone that can help transcribe? It is very difficult to read. Attached.

Hi Mark,
Gervacio Puente was from San Juan, PR, he lived in barrrio Lajas Arriba, was 44 years of age and his wife was Mauricia del Rosario Acosta y Sepulveda, from San German. They had 16 children and 8 were living at that time. The cause of death was hanging. I tried to find the record to read page two, but I can't find it.
To answer about FHL, Family Search made deals with churches and governments and these institutions put restrictions on the documents. Some you can only view in person visiting a FHL. At the libraries you'll find computer stations to log in and view the documents. Also, you'll find books, maps and possibly other sources.
I'm looking forward to viewing the next page.

Mark,
Trying to find the record for Santos, I found his father Gervacio Puentes:
I was impressed by the information:
Gervacio Puentes Sanjurjo
Parroquia de San Francisco, San Juan, 26 Jan 1860, Gervacio Puentes Sanjurjo, Escribano Real Publico y Notario de Indias, natural de esta capital y de 48 anos, hijo legitimo de Don Santos y Dona Maria Manuela Sanjurjo, fue casado en primeras nupcias con Dona Micaela Acosta, hijos: ?, Gervacio, Lorenzo, ?, Micaela y Santos. Segundas nupcias con Julia Paul, hijos Julia, Manuel y Jose
So Gervacio died in SJ at 48 years of age. His title was Public Notary of Indies (I don't know if I'm translating right), he ws the son of Santos and Da. Maria Manuela Sanjurjo. His first wie was Micaela Acosta, children: ?, Gervacio, Lorenzo, ?, Micaela and Santos. Second wife was Julia Paul (not sure about her last name) and children with her were Julia, Manuel and Jose.
The thing is, I had researched the Sanjurjos a while ago. Let me know if you know Spanish. This document on the Sanjurjos is very long. It's a military documentation that officers needed to file before marrying. If they failed to file it and then they died, their spouses were denied their pension. These documents go into details about jobs, how white and Catholic they were, how much dowry they were paying the husband, etc. It goes into the genealogy of the family. It tends to be repetitive because several witnesses are making a declaration of a list of questions.
Here you'll find your Puentes Sanjurjo line. The link is for Puerto Rico's National Archives. It's best to download it to your computer, then view it.

Maria - this is so helpful! Leveraging other community research, I see Gervasio was born approximately 1807 and died 1888. Was it Santos that died by hanging at the age of 48? His son Santos I have from 1844-1888, which ties out.
There is a lot of rich and old ancestry trees built out for Gervacio's wife - Micaela's family. I cannot find much on the Sanjurjo or the Puentes beyond Gervacio.
I tried accessing the Puerto Rico National Archives, but having trouble downloading the file.

Hi Mark,
The son, Santos died at 44 in 1888, his dad, Gervasio died at 48. Gervasio's dad was also named Santos.
I've had ancestors that died like Santos, after doing the rest of the family, I could understand him. In my case, smallpox
took his daughter and her children. Life was really tough then.
Try the upper link, the one that says "Presione aqui...", the bottom link is to copy the URL. Then go into your downloads folder for the file or make a search for a pdf file in your pc. Let me know if you still have problems, I can find a workaround.
I'm going to put the information on the tree that has been built already. Go to Family Search >Tree>Find> find by Id and enter LX7T-NVX. This is Gervasio. I haven't entered anything yet, but I will go to it sometime today.

Thank you. See the screenshot below. When I click the Presione aqui link, a new window pops up and there is an error that states the session has been terminated - click refresh - which I do, but nothing happens. I tried on both Chrome and Explorer.

Yes, me too. Something is going on. A huge grant came in and they are going to upload a lot of documents, but I don't know if it's because of that. I will update if I can find anything.

I had it downloaded to my computer. I put it in my Google Drive. Here's a link:

I'm going through it. First 16 pages are Micaela Petronila Puente Acosta's husband. Page 16 is a copy of her baptism, Jul 1842.
