Searching for family history information, please. Pettican family, believed to be French.
Hi there All,
I am looking for the birth records for Julia Pettican, daughter of Robert Pettican, who was a dock labourer, and possible passed away around 1914.
I have been told that Julia was French.
Julia (20 years) married Joseph Mc Dermott (23 years) on 26 December 1918 in Mile End Old Town, England, (I have the marriage certificate) but I cannot find any birth information for Julia - I believe she was born around 1898.
Julia had at least one brother by the name of Eugene Pettican.
Julia and Joseph had a son on 29 December 1919 named Stanley Joseph Mc Dermott (I have this birth certificate)
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Tracy

The 1901 census of England said that Julia Pettican was born in Whitechapel, London.
The census said she had 2 years.

Hi matthieucrouet, thanks for the info.
I have seen this census on FamilySearch, but because I was told, by Julia Pettican's granddaughter, that Julia was French I was unsure if this was the correct result, there is also no record of Julia's birth on FreeBMD or the GRO index for England and Wasles.
Also, the Geneanet site seems to be down at the moment, so I'll try access the documents later.
I really appreciate your help though.

Pettican is not a french name. In all my databases, I don't see birth of Pettican in France.

Yeah I thought as much, I couldn't find anything either.
That's why I wanted to ask the experts
No problem, thanks for your help though, I'll keep searching.

I think you're searching too far.
Julia wasn't French, nor born in France.
You know that your Julia is daughter of Robert, sister of Eugene and married in London (Mile End) and born about 1898.
People wasn't travel a lot at this time. All genealogist begin to search in the same locality.
The census has a perfect match with all theses informations :
Robert Pettican, 39 years; born in Mile End, London.
Hannah Pettican, 37 years, born in Whitechapel, London.
Mary Pettican, 12 years, born in Whitechapel, London.
Ernest Pettican, 8 years, born in Whitechapel, London.
Eugene Pettican, 5 years, born in Whitechapel, London.
Julia Pettican, 2 years, born in Whitechapel, London.
I don't understand why you need to continue to search in other country. If you want to find Julia's birth certificat, search in the whitechapel, London records between 1897 and 1901 and you will find it.

As I am not a genealogist, I wasn't sure if I should follow the word-of-mouth information I was given, or what I had found online, which is why I asked here. I didn't want to make a confirmation without more proof. Now that you have confirmed that there are no French records for Pettican, I will continue my search only in the London / England records.
Thank you
