How can I change my mother from living to deceased? Can I have two separate accounts, one to researc

I cannot answer you question about how to make her info indicate that she is deceased.
I can tell you that the 'Tree' is not your tree, the 'Tree' is owned by FamilySearch and you can enter data into it and move around in it when you first start unless you are connected to someone who is already in the 'Tree' it will appear that it is your private tree. But when you connect the information that you enter to someone who is already in the 'Tree' that will become very apparent that it is not your tree.

The people in the group @FamilySearch Family Tree can probably answer your first question.

You can put yourself as the home person if you go to your picture up in the top right of any page. You will need to be logged in. Then, click on your name and go to settings in the drop down.
Scroll down towards the bottom and look for family tree preferences.
Click on Edit and you can change the home person. Grab your PID number which is located to the right of your name. It is numbers and letters.
Then, you should be able to Edit your Mother’s death. Do you know how to get to her detail page? Once on her detail page, scroll down to death. Click on edit and then select the deceased button. Add her death date and place.
LMK if that works and if you have any other questions.

Can you clarify what you mean by connected in your statement, "unless you are connected to someone who is already in the tree"? Thank you.

FIRST 'Question' ... [ Mother, "Living" to "Deceased" ]
.
Lets deal with that later ...
SECOND 'Question' ... [ Two (2), separate, 'FamilySearch' Accounts ]
.
Short Answer: 'No', you DO NOT need two (2) separate 'FamilySearch' Accounts
.
You ONLY need ONE 'FamilySearch' Account.
.
And, that is to research, BOTH, your "Maternal'; and, your "Paternal", lines.
.
Now ...
As to your two (2) separate 'FamilySearch' Accounts ...
.
Contact the "Support" of 'FamilySearch'.
.
"Support" can "Merge"/"Combine" your two (x2) accounts into ONE.
.
How to contact "Support" of 'FamilySearch' ...
.
.
Either, "Send" them a 'Message'; or, "Call" (ie. Phone) them directly.
.
.
That should address/fix your two (2) separate 'FamilySearch' Accounts.
.
I hope this helps, somewhat.
.
I will discuss the matter about your Mother in the next 'Answer'.

Thanks Brett. I was able to change myself as lead person and edit my mother to deceased with help from others, which I appreciate. Only problem is all those years of research on mom's side has disappeared. I am hoping there is a way to retrieve all that.

There may be duplicates of her. Is she connected to her parents?

Next instalment ...
.
As to your Mother, "Living" to "Deceased" ...
.
Due to the fact that this IS Your Mother; and, as such, ONLY recent ...
.
This can add complexity to the mix ...
.
IF, you are a Member of the Church; THEN, this can add even another layer of complexity to the mix ...
[ nothing significant; but, still, 'muddies the water', so to speak ... ]
.
When you go to "Make" (ie. "Edit") your Mother's 'Status' from "Living" to "Deceased", such may NOT be actioned IMMEDIATELY, in the "System".
.
IF, such is the case; THEN, you most likely should have gotten a 'Message' that a 'Support" Case has been raised.
.
You will NEED to just be patient and WAIT, until that is actioned, it should ONLY take a Day or Two ...
.
"Support" of 'FamilySearch' checks-out the situation (they WILL come BACK to you with MORE 'Questions', if EVERYTING is NOT straightforward); and, if everything is OK; THEN, your Mother's 'Status' will automatically be "Changed" from "Living" to "Deceased"; but, ONLY in that ONE 'FamilySearch' Account, NOT any other.
.
IF, your Mother appears as "Living" in your OTHER 'FamilySearch' Account; THEN, you NEED to DO the SAME process in that Account.
.
Now ...
BACK to my FIRST 'Answer' ...
.
Once "Support" of 'FamilySearch' does "Merge"/"Combine" your two (x2) 'FamilySearch' Accounts, into ONE ...
.
You will PROBABLY have a NUMBER of "Duplicate" individuals/persons, that YOU will need to "Merge"/"Combine" yourself ...
.
Lets deal with that later ...
.
Probably ... "Information OVERLOAD" ... at the moment.
.
'First things First' ... JUST ... "Merge"/"Combine" your two (x2) 'FamilySearch' Accounts.
.
The REST can be SORTED once you have had that done ...
.
Brett
.
ps: We were ALL "New" ONCE ...

Due to the nature of your 'Question ...
.
I am "Moving" this 'Question' of yours, in the 'Group' being "How to Use FamilySearch Community", in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, to the 'Group' being "FamilySearch Family Tree" (one of the more appropriate 'Groups'), in the Forum; so that, the members of that group can answer/assist you.
.
That Group is "Public", which you can join, if you wish.
.
As, that 'Group' being "How to Use FamilySearch Community" relates to HOW to USE the "FamilySearch.Community" Forum", rather than for research help/assistance.

Yes, she is connected to her parents.

What info did you lose on her?
0 -
I don't see her parents, grandparents, etc. any longer.

Carol, just checked again and looks like they all came back. Thanks so much for all your help. I have been trying to make these changes for over a year now. Thank you again.

When you enter information you start with a person, usually you start with yourself, since you are living you will be the only one who can see the information that you enter for yourself, Then you can add your children if you have any, no one else will see them as long as they are living. You can also add your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc when you add them you should do a search to see if they are already in the tree. If they are then you connect to that entry rather than creating a new entry, If you create a new entry the system may suggest possible duplicates which if they are actually duplicates would mean that they are already in the system and you would need to merge the records. When you connect to a person who is already in the tree you are automatically connected to everyone that they are connected to. In other words you can see their parents, their children, their siblings, etc, who are deceased.

I did not know that. Thank you very much.
