what is the correct spelling of this town Kosic, Yugoslavia?
what is the correct spelling of this town Kosic, Yugoslavia? I can't find it on the map. I am looking for where I can find the birth record for 1883 in that town. They got married in Berkovica, Yugoslavia in 1903.
These towns were taken from US Naturalization in Milwaukee, WI.

What religion were they? It looks like it could be Kozice which is located about 11 km south-east of Gornji Miholjac [map]. The place they married could be Nova Bukovica, Verőcze, Hungary, now Nova Bukovica, Croatia. It is just a few kilometers south of Kozice.

His passenger list on Ancestry says he was born in Novake, Hungary, which is just north of Gornji Miholjac and his wife's birthplace is spelled Kozika on that record (2nd page), in case that's helpful. There really isn't a "correct" way to spell it--it depends on which time period and which language it was recorded in.

I recognize that this is going to be difficult for you to find because Yugoslavia is made of several groups/areas including Croatia, Servia and Slovenia. I do have a suggestion that might help. I belong to another group that researchs for Donauschwaben villages ... my heritage is Hungarian .. but for instance my father was born in Hungary which is now Romania. I am going to give you a website to a mailing list that includes the Batschka which includes Yugoslavia.
