Translation of individual Census record 1891 Bernt Petersen, and his family on following pages. Skod

I'm trying to find information on this family, and why the father has two names, Bernt Petersen or Brithanus Elias Petersen MXNX-QHP. They both have basically the same birth year, and the same birth place, and married to the same woman. But in the 1875 Census he's listed as Brithanus and on the 1891 Census he's listed as Bernt. The majority of his children's birth records list Brithanus, his marriage record lists Birthanus. His first two children the father is Brithanus, his next two children the father is Bernt/Bearnt, the next 5 children the father is Brithanus. The children born from 1864-1874 are all on the 1875 Census with father Brithanus. The 1891 Census has him listed as Bernt Petersen and all the same children alive at the time. The question, are Bernt and Brithanus the same person? And is it safe to say I can add a couple more children to this family?

If all the information you have shows that Brithanus and Bernt are the same person then he certainly is. And there is certainly enough correlation between the two census records to be confident of that.

 

The two names are basically equivalent in that same way that William/Will and Richard/Rick and many other English examples are.

 

I don't know if it is is certain parents at certain times in history or if it is particular priests who decide to get fancy with names. But I have seen many parish records where all of a sudden all the boys named Martin are christened Martinius, Olav is Olavius, Jakob is Jakobius, etc. Your example is the same type of situation where someone is showing off their Latin education.

 

As a final example I found on a quick search of *us names, how do you like this one?

 

Severin Cornelius Raskanus Britannus Severinsen

 

I doubt he ever actually used that mouthful when introducing himself!

Thank you so much Gordon. The information you share is always valuable. I learn so much from your posts. This makes total sense to me as many people in my family from this County have multiple Latin names. For example my Grandfather, when he immigrated to the USA, changed his name to Anton Andreasen Grevstad. On the passenger list he is listed as Anton I.K.A. Grebstad. The family farm is Grebstad in Sykkyleven. His birth name in Norway was Anton Ingvald Kornelius Andreasen Grebstad. That's a mouthful too. LOL! His father was Andreas Johan Grebstad. Thanks again for explaining the customs to me. It really helps me in my research.

Can anyone look at the individual pages of family names and tell me position/relationship in family other than son/daughter, and possible occupations of individuals? I like to record as much detail as possible when documenting people/families.

That was interesting. I never realized so much was not transcribed in the 1891 census and have gotten around to taking a look. I've just put items that are not on the transcribed version. The only positions are relationships are that of son/daughter.

I think I may have found it on FS wiki search. In Sogn og Fjordane County, there is a Municipality Askvoll, but also one named Vilnes. This would be a good place to start. Probably start with Vilnes as that is listed in Karl Mathias Olssen Vilnes name, as well as his father's name on the marriage record.
