What is the purpose of connecting FTDNA to Geni?

I’m sorry but I don’t have a definitive answer for this. I connected mine only because it was an option. Basically you have your dna info on both sites, I haven’t found a “purpose” for this yet as I haven’t seen any links or anything from one site to the other, but with that said, I should also say I haven’t really spent that much time on either of the two sites just yet. I have spent some time on Geni and like the options they have for viewing someone’s family info, but I haven’t spent that much time working on the dna portion just yet.

I have not linked FTDNA to Geni. I do know that a press release by FTDNA was issued a couple of years ago. Although I question the claim that they have the most comprehensive database, there is value in having DNA in the FTDNA database.
On July 1, 2016, FTDNA issued a statement that said, in part:
Family Tree DNA has the world’s most comprehensive DNA testing and databases. Along with the company’s advanced suite of DNA tests, the new integration with Geni provides users of both platforms the ability to help confirm genetic relationships and discover previously unknown relatives. The integration of data is authenticated and secure, allowing simple transfer of DNA results from Family Tree DNA to Geni, should users opt to do so.
This added cross-functional feature is available to users who have tested their DNA with Family Tree DNA and have a profile with Geni, but can also be utilized by anyone who registers with both platforms. To that end, the optional and error-free integration of DNA conveniently validates connections and relationships within one’s family tree. Marker data of Y-DNA and mtDNA tests is transferred—there is no manual entry of DNA information, thereby preventing human error.

Because of "Who Do You Think You Are?", which is basically a commercial, Ancestry now has the largest small chain database. But FTDNA is the oldest and is research based. It has the largest long chain database (people have tested hundreds of down chain SNPs beyond the basic 36/37 chromosomes. I am in a FTDNA project where one of the DNA researchers asks me to order a specialized SNP test every few years because my father's DNA falls into a rare line they have been researching for decades. If your goal is basic genealogy/ancestry, I do not think you need the advanced research tools offered by FTDNA + Geni. Just pick the cheapest 36/37 run and upload for free to GedMatch. If you also want the genetic health info, buy the 23Me basic + health. But make sure you fully understand that genetic predisposition does not mean a person will develop that disorder/disease, so the information has limitations.
