That symbol that looks like a film case, it means that these films are only available in microfilm. They have not been digitized to be seen online, yet. It is my understanding that FamilySearch plans to have all the films digitized in the next few years instead of copying the films and shipping them to FHC's.

When they are digitized, you might only be able to view them at the Family History Center. It depends upon the agreement that was made with the archive that let them film the records. It is unknown how long it will take until they are made available. Your only choice is to be patient or hire someone at the Salt Lake Library to look at the records for you. It will be great when this big project is completed!

The company that made the microfilm copies to send out to local FHL's quadrupled their price for the service. It was no longer reasonable to pass that cost on to the users. The LDS church is working hard on digitizing all of the microfilms they have, but that does not mean that we will be able to see all of the microfilms on line from your home computer. This is because of the contracts the church had with the location who owns the material. Some locations have allowed the LDS church to make copies of their information but have limitations on where that information can be viewed. some can be viewed in the public domain which means from your home computer, while other have to be viewed from the local FHL locations and still some are only allowed to be viewed at the Salt Lake library.

Apparently I didn't put in enough information. About 3 years ago, when I was co-director of the FHC, one of the staff notified me that the film that I had ordered for Runau (before they could no longer be ordered) was digitized and online. It could only be seen at FHCs and Salt Lake, not at home. I have been looking at them at the FHC for the past 2 years. When I went recently to to LA FHL it was back to being a microfilm only seen at Salt Lake.

We do not have access to what films were digitized then then pulled off the digitized list or the reasons. We can only tell you that according the FamilySearch Card Catalog the records are only on microfilm.

The reason is that the contracts FamilySearch made with the record-holding archives many years ago do not expressly permit them being made available online . So, until the contracts can be re-negotiated, the records will not be available online. You maty be able to find the records you need elsewhere. See the portal www.lostshoebox.com for possible websites.

You may be able to access the films on Ancestryinstitution.com at the family history center. Try looking for someone you know is recorded in those films, without putting a locality in the search box.
