Ordinances Ready Questions
Hi all, a patron asked me these two questions, what say yee?
I went to my own Ordinance ready list, and found baptismal ordinance cards for 4 of my deceased relatives. If I do not want to personally do the baptisms/confirmations for these 4 people, is there a way to "share" these names with the temple so that other people can do these baptisms/confirmations for my ancestors?
And if some one else does the baptisms, will these names eventually come back on to my list of Initiatories on my Ordinances Ready site for me to complete the other ordinance for these people?

@robertleelathen1 robertleelathen1 Ordinances Ready is designed as a way to find names to take to the temple. Those names expire sooner than names you added after doing research because the intention is that you use it when you are ready to go to the temple to do the work. According to the help article about Ordinances Ready: "If you decide not to perform the ordinances reserved using Ordinances Ready, please unreserve the ordinances. You cannot share ordinances found through Ordinances Ready with another person."
To answer the other part of your question: yes, if someone else does the baptisms using Ordinances Ready for people related to you, you could possibly be offered some of the other ordinances those people need next time you use Ordinances Ready.

As a follow on from the previous answer ...
.
With regards "OrdinancesReady" (OR) ...
.
If they were talking about individuals/persons that OR found in their "Temple" List; and, the particular "Ordinances" are NOT, "Reserved"; and/or, "Share[d] with the Temple System", by another Member; then, the answer to both is 'Yes'.
.
But, if they were talking about individuals/persons that OR found in the "Temple" File System; then, those particular "Ordinances" are ALREADY, "Reserved"; and, "Share[d] with the Temple System", by another Member; and, the answer to both is 'NO'.
.
I hope this helps.

In your temple list, place a check mark in front of the name that you would like to share, then notice at the top of the temple name list click on the box that says "Share." A drop down menu provides two options: 1 share with temple or 2. Share with family or friends.
In answer to your second question, the ordinance list lets you decide which ordinances you would like to share. For example you can share baptism and confirmation with a family member and keep the remainder of the ordinances in your temple list. Hope this is clear.
Kind Regards,
Deveney

You cannot share names that you received from Ordinances Ready. They were already shared with the temple system and that is how you were able to get them from Ordinances Ready. Once the BC is done, The rest of the ordinances will NOT be in your reserve list.

Although most of the answers in this discussion are mostly correct, there is one scenario for Ordinances Ready that no one has mentioned. One place that OR looks for possible ordinances is persons in the Family Tree that have ordinances ready for temple work (often colloquially called "green temples"). When OR finds such ordinances, they will have a heading "From Family Tree". Reserving such ordinances via OR makes them normal reservations on your list, and you are free to share them with the temple system or other people.
Of course, it's entirely possible that OR will only give you names that were already in the temple system, and the previous posts correctly noted that those cannot be shared with the temple system or with other people.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful answers!!

You can give them to the YM/YW Leaders for the next Youth Temple Trip. That's what I do : )

Thanks Colleen, I have a question about that. Since the original question relates to printed cards that came only from Ordinances Ready (that has a time limit to reserve them for i think just two monthts), what happens if you actually print the reserved OR names and then hold the cards over the two month limit that OR normally has for reserved names?

@robertleelathen1 robertleelathen1 It sounds like you're focusing on reservations that Ordinances Ready gives to you that were shared with the Temple by some other patron. Those reservations will expire in 90 days (not two months).
Note that Ordinances Ready can also give you ordinances that you already had in your reservation list, or ordinances that it found in your family tree (so-called "green temples"). Such ordinances have the usual expiration of 2 years.
Regardless of whether you are talking about reservations that expire in 90 days or 2 years, what happens with printed cards is the same. If you use a printed card to temple work AFTER that reservation has expired, you have the risk that someone else reserved the ordinance in the meantime. You might be lucky and perform the ordinance using your printed card before anyone else reserves the ordinance. But if someone else reserved it, and you perform the ordinance with an expired card, that can create two distinct problems: 1) when you finally perform the ordinance, it has already been performed by someone else, or 2) you perform the ordinance first, but the person with the new valid reservation printed the card before you did the ordinance, and then performs the ordinance again using their printed card. In both cases, the duplicate ordinance won't be detected until the temple tries to record the second ordinance, and then it's too late -- the second ordinance won't be recorded, and patron and temple time was wasted. So it's always best to make sure your reservations have not expired before you perform any temple ordinances.

I'm hoping that the church will change the "printed date" on the cards to the "expiration date" or mark them some how so we can keep track of this. I have a lot of cards right now. We just had our Temple renovated and are looking forward to catching up. To figure out what is what seems like a hassel but I haven't tried yet....Now we are not getting our cards back makes us have another problem to solve. All I know is that the Lord knows best. I'm not sure if anyone out there knows why we are not getting the cards back???

Thanks Alan, that is just what I needed!

'Yes' it is a 'hassle'; but, whether we like it or not, it OUR "Responsibility"as Members to "Check" ALL "Cards" (whether old or new) just BEFORE we go to the "Temple" to do the "Ordinance" Work for our Ancestors to ENSURE that any "Ordinance" Work we plan to do is NOT already done.
.
There are just too many OLD "Cards" floating about out there, where the "Ordinance" Work has already been "Completed".
.
Too many Members just take "Cards" (whether old or new) to the "Temple" to do the "Ordinance" Work for their Ancestors WITHOUT ensuring that any "Ordinance" Work has NOT already been done.
.
As has been; and, is currently, the practice, PRINTED "Cards" DO NOT "Expire", only the (our) RESERVATIONS "Expire".
.
Even if an "Expiry" Date is printed on the "Cards", many Members will not even notice; and, it is possible that the "Ordinance Workers" at the "Temples" may NOT notice; where, the Work is done (again) regardless.
.
As to your question as to why the "Cards" are not being "Returned", just take a look at posts in this Forum on that matter.
.
And, ALSO, for some 'light' reading, take a look at these posts in the "FamilySearch" ("GetSatisfaction") 'Feedback' Forum of the matter:

You make sure that reservations have not expired by looking up the reservation in your Temple Reservation list. Do this for each card you intend to take on your next temple trip.
And note that expiration is only one thing that might happen that could make doing those particular ordinances unnecessary. It's also possible that the person for whom you reserved ordinances got merged with another person on the Family Tree, and that other person has already had the ordinances performed. Or something else was changed on the person that makes the temple work not doable at this time (there's a lot of possibilities here, including possible duplicates, data problems, changing the sex, etc.).
So it's a good practice to double check that you still have the reservation on your list and that the ordinance is ready to be performed before you go to the temple.

Explain abut not getting cards back. I have been getting cards back. Does it have to do with OR cards or the cards you have reserved and printed at home from you reservation list?

Ron Tanner gave a fairly decent explanation during one of his Thursday night video sessions. This is in a pilot phase right now.
The problem they're trying to solve is this:
In BIG/BUSY temples, lots of people are coming through their respective ordinances/sessions, and wanting their cards back. The large endowment sessions prove especially hard, as a flood of cards come in at one time, and after a quick change back to street clothes, people want their cards back. That RUSH to try to get things recorded results in names being missed.
With the cards being retained by the temple, each card will be checked TWICE. Once as soon as can be done (may be towards the end of the day), and then a week later.
You can imagine trying to reunite people with cards after any delay like that, so they're just going to destroy the cards.
The greatest concerns have been the sentimental value placed on their ancestors' cards (date stamped on it, not just printed out), having to print out new cards for each ordinance (obviously baptism and confirmation is done usually at the same time), managing those instances where someone has come a long way, and they want to take their ancestors' names through as many ordinances as can be done in a day(s)/week thus requiring a retrieval (as pre-printed cards won't have any info for those interim ordinances before they've been performed. )
It will be accompanied by the removal of cabinets, which will cascade into self-managing cards, not distributing them in the temple, perhaps limiting the number of reservations that people will hold on to, and free up the staff time from having to re-file cards back in the cabinet. (I've had a few disappear)
I hope that helps. Again, it's in pilot. It may not spread everywhere.

Ok, I've found out that our area Temple is in this Pilot Program trying out not giving our Family File Cards back. It's not in all Temples. This is a trial to see what works. Also, I don't know how it actually works, but in Oct my husband and I will be working in this Temple and will see it first hand. There may be some exceptions and someone gave a great idea of printing a new card and keeping your stamped one at home. You do need to remember to pencil in that the work was done with Temple and date. The perposs is to help prevent duplicated work being done. I also, looked up all my cards by their numbers and was surprised as to how many were no good. Even though they may still be ok by the date on my card... This program is not perfect and we are not either. So, to not waist my time and my Lord's time, I will now teach this to my ward. And will always check my cards the night before.

Colleen, What do you mean by your cards were no good.
Also I had not heard of Ron Tanner's Thursday night video sessions. How do i find out about them?
I give my cards out to many relatives and the work is done often when they are on vacation. Besides most of them do not go to the temple I do. They get me the cards back for me to do the sealings. It would be nice to know which cards are not coming back to me (which temples are on a pilot.)
Thanks for your prompt replies,

"No good" means it has expired, been reserved by some else, completed, or unavailable....
You might want to keep a list , make a copy or take a picture of the ones you give out. Have them tell you when they are going so you can check them on familysearch a few days before.
The "Not Returning Cards" is at only some, not all Temples. There is nothing we can do about that but except it. Times are changing, they are trying to figure out how to stop having members do Ordiences over and over again for the same person.
Like I said, I was surprised as to how many of mine were " no good". Seriously go and check yours.
Good luck 😊

Ron Tanner does a Facebook live Q & A every other Thursday night. His page is called Family History Ron. All his old episodes are available to watch either on the FB page or on Youtube. He answers many questions and tells us what is coming in the future. He explains the Beta program about not giving the names back. After you listed to him, you'll understand why it is necessary. I highly recommend these sessions to help us keep up with the changes.

He posts the schedule on his Facebook page. Occasionally he has to skip if he has a conference to go to. Go to "like" his page and you'll get notifications.
