Howdy - thought I'd introduce myself. I started (informally) researching my direct tree after my mom died in 2012. We'd sorted out the house & I had a tin of photos. I started to go thru them and try & remember who was whom - couldn't do it. And, now - no mom & dad to ID them and tell me the old stories again.

I looked around and, on a budget, decided to start with a new website called "WikiTree" - wikitree.com.

It works very much like Wikipedia, of course - open source, anyone can contribute if you have 'new info'.

Of course after every idealistic start, some general rules & security features were included such as: all 'profiles' of living persons are locked to everyone except the creator (and whoever he or she deems).

All 'profiles' of people entered are flagged if they do not have sources, so it's best to *always* provide sources.

Generally the trend is from chaos towards order, as one person adds a profile, including what they know, another user backs it up with some new details and sources or possibly by attaching a missing spouse.

Too long to list here how it all works in the specific, but - my profile is: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Yancey-389, and my ancestry should be view-able, even to those without an account. Persons deceases over 50 years are 'entirely unlocked' to view (but not modify - except by anyone with a - free- account). For a good example of a fully open profile, visit, Ol' "Uncle" John Yancey - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Yancey-1020

Importing via GEDCOM files is available - please try to clear up any duplicates that might be created in the process.

I've enjoyed adding to this 'open source' system, and in helping (and being helped) make corrections.

Best -
