Paula would you mind reframing this statement into a question?
Koenig, König is a common last name. What have you looked at so far.
There are a series of things I would do. First, I would track your directline relatives first and see what I can find on them. When were their first children born? Were they religious? If yes, do you know where they went to church, where they were married, and then if the children were christened? Then, where are they buried? Do you have a death record for them?
Then I would check census records from 1880 on until to their deaths. And I would check to see who their neighbors are the page before and the page after their entry. Look for other Koenigs, and Orthel's. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records will be your most valuable records, because they may indicated when they emigrated, and if they naturalized, and if yes, when.
Keep a research log on what you find, and where. Then go to your next H.W. Koenig, and see what you find. Are they in close proximity? Do they say where they are from?
I would take a good hard look at your great grandfather born about 1845, who married Anna Orthel in 1871 in LaSalle, IL.
This is the FAN research strategy. Family, Associates and Neighbors. Until you figure out where he is from, it will be tricky.
