The writing is beautiful, but it is always helpful if we have a link to the image so we can read the column headings and compare entries. Alfred is a fisherman, his wife is Anie Marie Magrethe Nielsen who was born 18 November 1877. She is 21 years old living in Svancke.

I'm guessing you already have this Utah death certificate for Alfred. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-63L3-8N7?i=1&cc=1747615

I believe the confirmation record attached to Anie in FamilySearch does not match this individual because the birth dates conflict. The confirmation record indicates a birth of 26 December 1875. It should be 18 November 1877.

Yes I had the son - Alfred Albert's - utah death certificate - but not the household record - which is difficult to read on my phone. What does the column for birthplace read for Anna - Germany?

Did confirmation always occur 13/14 years after birth? Yes it's been difficult to locate a death record or birth record for Anna - I wasn't sure if that confirmation was correct either so listed it as a possible (one parish over from Svaneke). If she's from Germany then I guess I should look there - but don't have good location yet. I tried looking for confirmation or birth in Svaneke in 1877 but no good results that I saw. I'll remove that confirmation since we seem to have 2 records indicating her birth in 1877.

Here is the christening record for Anie Marie Margrethe Larsen, born 18 November 1877 in Øster Marie (as seen in the 1901 census record). She was christened in the church 12 January 1878. Her mother was widowed, Marie Kirstine Larsen of fisherman Niels Hansen Beck in Bølshavn. Mother is 37 years old. https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=159374#159374,26798293

The last column indicates the child's father is Johan Peter Karlsen, Steenhugger (stone mason) in Nexo. This could be him in the 1890 census. In 1890 Denmark Census

    Johan Peter Karlsen

    Gender:Male

Birth date:Circa 1844 born in Sweden

    Residence:Feb 1 1890  Neksø Efter Iøbenumre,

    Nexø, Denmark

    Age:46

    Marital status:Single

Wow what a woven record to follow - thank you! So Anna's maiden name is really Larsen or did children take the widowed mother's maiden name?

I'm not seeing the Larsen/Beck/Karlsen connection on those links - granted it's difficult to see these record images on my phone. So her mother was a Larsen that married a Beck - was widowed and then married a Karlson or vice versa?

Again wow - confusing - her mother or father was widowed? It appears that Niels Hansen Beck is the widower that married Anna's Larsen mother? Is it common for daughters to take the mother's name as mentioned in the christening record you mentioned?

When Niels Hansen Beck was married to Marie Kirstine Laursen, he was a widow. When Anie was born her mother was a widow and the father was not Marie's deceased husband, but a man named Johan Peter Karlsen. They were not married and were not married three years after the child was born. I have not yet looked for the death of Niels but I'll get to it.

Anie (Annie, Anine) took on the surname of Beck, but he was not her father. Her confirmation record indicates her mother is unmarried Marie Kirstine Larsen, widow of fisherman Niels Hansen Beck. It does not say he is her father. https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=159376#159376,26798510Clipboard05

The 1920 Census in Utah I think it is shows Albert Nelson and Ania/Anne Beck had 8 children 5 of whom we're still living. The oldest 3 I think we're born in Denmark - but have only Alfred Albert's birth for sure so far. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise Shari - you have literally done in an hour what I spent all day trying to decipher - what an introduction to Danish/Scandinavian records!

Earlier you asked about when confirmations took place. In Denmark it is generally about age 14 but can go a few years after. It is a record you should always try to find, it often adds clarification and confirms what data you have. I was in a hurry tonight so I didn't do a very good job of answering your questions. Let me know if you need more help. You are very fortunate because you have some great records that also include a birth date and place for the biological father of your ancestor (although the parents did not marry it is your blood line and could be followed if you wish).

I'm actually a consultant - not knowledgeable in Scandinavian records - trying to help extend this line - you have done great! We are another generation back. Hopefully some of my comments/questions will help others that also need to learn how these Danish records work! Again thank you!

Just several last points of clarification. Her birth record shows maiden name Larsen because that is her mother's maiden name? Niels Hansen Beck is not the husband who died leaving Marie Kirstine Larsen with a daughter - but her husband after unmarried Johan Peter Karlsen and she have conceived Annie? There's a lot of widowing in the record that makes it a little unclear.

We are working in a time period when we will see records using patronymics and times when a family name is used. We also have the event of a child Anine? Anie being born to a widowed, but now unmarried mother. So, the last name in cases of having an unmarried mother the child could take on the last name of the mother (Larsen). Yes, you are right correct. I need to find Niels death to clarify this timeline, but he was not Anine's father, but rather the unmarried Johan Peter Karlsen, from Sweden.

1874 death of Niels Hansen Bech, died 19 April 1874, buried 25 April in Øster Marie parish. He was 60 years old, married. I believe this is the correct person because the calculated birth year would be 1814 which matches the calculated birth year on his marriage (he was 47 years old at marriage in 1861). A probate may have been created because he had a young child. https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=206850#206850,39275051Niels Hansen Bech death

Magnus is a child of Niels and Marie, but Karen is from a previous marriage to Karen Marie Espersen.

Magnus Andreas Bech born 7 September 1863, christening at home the 29th October and in the church 14 November. Father is fisherman Niels Hansen Bech and mother Marie Larsen 23 years old living in Bodilshavn. Vaccinated 20 June 1864.

Father of Anie, Johan Peter Karlsen was a steenhugger (earlier incorrect spelling). He was someone who shaped stones for burial places, monuments etc. Stenhugger, a stone mason.

So if Niels Hansen Beck was married to Marie Kirstine Larsen in 1870 Census and dies in 1874 before Annie Marie Margrethe is born - it seems that she adopted her mother's previous husband's name and not her biological father's - right? So what the records are showng is that Marie Kirstine Larsen is the widow of Niels Hansen Beck not that he married her after she was widow of some other marriage? Niels was also apparently himself a widower as you mentioned above - with a daughter from that marriage in 1870 Census.

Yes, I think you have the correct series of events and that Annie used the Beck name from her mother's earlier marriage. Annie may have never known anything about her biological father.
