Hi,

 

Need a little help with this. 1834 census of Horbije, Dronninglande, Hjorring, Denmark

 

I'm new to Danish research and can't quite figure out some of the words. The entry is:

Christen Christ3ensen age 41 married gaardmand=farmer?

Ane Hansdatter age 42 married wife

Christen Christensen age 10 unmarried

Mette Margrette Christensdatter age 9 (can't read - children?)

Hans Christensen age 5

Zisfel? Marie Larsdatter age 16 (can't read)

Gjertrud Marie Hansdatter age 85 widow (can't read)

Ira, you might like this indexed version of the census. Christen, Mette and Hans are their children. Zidsel is a servant. It appears Ane has died by 1840 and Christen married now to Johanne Marie Sørensdatter, 25 years old.

1845 Census for Christen and Johanne. Johanne's father, Søren Lausen and her sister Christiane are now living with the family. Johanes Marinus 12 is a foster child.

Thanks Shari, Tell me where you found this index. This helps quite a bit. Doesn't look like Gertrude Hansdatter is a relative. I guess it says retire wife whatever that means.

 

I'm having trouble identifying the Correct Christen Christensen who married Johanne Marie Hansdatter. I think there are two couples with the same name hanging around the same area. So I'm trying to be careful and comparing the two through these census records. Thanks, Ira

Ira, there are a couple websites that can give you indexed Danish Census information. The one I used above is ddd.dda.dk. It is excellent but individuals new to it may find it challenging. Your success in getting results will depend upon understanding how to do a search so read the search tips (critical). Spelling must be exact. Example: You want to find a Anne Larsen. If you search for Ane Larsen or Ane Larsdatter it won't appear. I would search with: An% Lar%. This would most likely "capture" a match. The underscore replaces just one letter. Example search: S_ren for Søren. You get the idea. Do not fill in each box, remember less is better! You can use the age and year to narrow your search. Try an experiment and see if you the find the already discovered people in the censuses I posted above. Another website others enjoy is danishfamilysearch.com It always recommended to see the original record so you did very well. MyHeritage.com is also a wonderful resource.
