I think it's awesome that you were able to find his death date on the payroll! Consider yourself very lucky (blessed). I do not think you'll find anything more definitive as to his death. However, once the libraries open again, you might find somewhat more about his military service by flollowing suggestions at https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Revolutionary_War_Service_Records#Revolutionary_War_Rolls
