General Questions — Dennis J Yancey

    Edited November 25, 2020 at 2:09 PM

    Digital Publishing???

How many of you have considered writing/creating/publishing a book about your family - or about some genealogical subject matter - but just didn't quite know where to start, how to do it in a very rapidly changing technological world, and how to keep costs down?

Each persons goals and plans and how they get there are different - but here are just various examples of how various serious researchers have created a "labor of love" dedicated to their area of expertise - and done so - with limited technological challenges, with very little to no cost, and in ways that put there research at the hands of those most interested in it.

I'm not saying there is no need to ever print physical books

BUT one should very seriously consider digital technologies and how it applies to compiling and share one's research. It can often be done with a cost that is very nominal to almost free - as compared to huge up front costs once associated with book printing.

    here are some great examples:

Nathan Twyman's - "American Twymans" (using Internet Archive)

Ken Shirley's various books dedicated to his family lines

(using a web site hosting his creations)

Kenneth B Yancey beautiful creations using DeskTop Publishing software and uploaded to FamilySearch Books.

Rose Morton - and her book "My Family Keepers" - of interest to those doing slave research - posted under the Kindle option.

and even "print on demand" like Lulul.com

    examples:

    A Yancey Family CookBook

and even if what you have created is nothing more than a very plain - black and white simple Word document - it can still be easily "published and shared"

Here for example - is something very plain and simple that is in the FamilySearch Catalog.

here is one example: "The Yancey Family of America"

Dont think it has to be complicated or that it will be totally technically challenging . ..

it can be much easier than you realize.
