"Is it possible to find Merchant Seaman records for 1840s?".
My 3rd Great Grandfather was a Francis James born 1818 in Newlyn Cornwall . A family rumour is that he was in the Merchant Navy about 1840 . I have no authentic records , so i am hoping to find him on a Maritime site somewhere? . Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you.

I gather, NO luck, then with your post in the 'Group' being "Family History Research" back on 27 October ...

"Could anyone confirm my 3 x G Grandfather was in the Merchant Navy around 1838?".
.
Question: Have you tried the "National Archives" of the United Kingdom?
.
National Archives of the United Kingdom

.
And, in 'FamilySearch' there is ...
.
United Kingdom, Merchant Navy Seamen Records, 1835-1941

.
And, I just came across this ...

Thanks for your reply reg Francis . No! I i have had no luck in finding Francis in any of the records. I wonder if i could ask you if you are on the Find My Past site at all?. I myself am not subscribed and there may be a possibility that Francis is on a record there. My last option...
Thank you for your interest in my query and best wishes.

Although I don't have a subscription to FMP, I am a registered user, so can at least see the indexes to their various collections.
Using the one for the "Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835-1857" collection I found the following:
First Name Last Name Birth Year Birth County Series
Francis James 1818 Cornwall BT115
(Sorry the columns don't line-up!)
There are also records for an individual of the same name, born 1790 in Cornwall.
Now all you need is a kind subscriber / someone who had free access to FMP to check out the transcriptions / images that are on the website and might well relate to individuals of interest to you.
BTW - I assume the person you are talking about has the ID of M4HZ-R51 in Family Tree. I notice the merchant navy record at
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KCQR-JMQ?treeref=M4HZ-R51 has not been attached - I imagine because of the uncertainty of whether this record (which presumably relates to about 1846, given the detail) actually is for your Francis James.

I have just noticed (from a link provided by Brett) that this record is indexed on FamilySearch, but does not provide much information.
