As I received the message from Family Search, then, on what basis do they (FS) ascertain one's relationship to the Mayflower?

simply by your family line as it is recorded in FS FT at the moment.
(doesnt mean its proven - just based on your recorded line of descent)

There have been lost of message like this
Descent from Mayflower
Descent from a revolutionary war soldier
and various similar items
This is simply based on a database of such people (like the people on the Mayflower) and whether your ID in FS FT has a line of descent that connects to that person.
BUT FS FT is only as good as the quality and reliability of the records there in.
and no one is claiming that the records in FS are 100% reliable (so you will need to verify the line based on your research as well as using resources that you feel are reliable)

Thank you, Dennis. I've contacted NEHGS for some info too as they were referenced in the email I received. I do use the FS tree and document carefully, as I see many people do these days, others...not so much. As to the stated Mayflower line descent given me, it looks plausible. I'm not so much interested in joining Mayflower as mining proven data on my ancestors. Bonnie

Tools like Relative Finder and Puzzilla are great tools in analyzing your family tree that have capacities for analysis way beyond FS FT.
