I'm trying to find sources for a an ancestor named Jan Heijblom. He's got parents and children with sources but he doesn't have anything for himself. How can I go about starting to find his records?

I found a christening record and a burial record for Jan Heijblom L4WB-GK3. I used the research site openarch.nl. After logging onto the site, enter the person's name and narrow the search to Leiden, as suggested on his person page. Three entries will come up and the first two are for Jan, a burial record and a christening record.

 

On the Christening page, there is a scan on the lower right side of the page. Click on it and you will be able to see Jan as the second entry under 22 Sept. It also lists his birth date.

 

• The burial record is found on Leiden » Begraven 1785-1794 Index, Begraven 1785-1794 / Alle Gezindten which is on the list in the lower right hand side of the page. You can use the Snipit Tool to cut and paste the image to Jan's record so he will have two sources.

If you are starting research in the Netherlands, it might be worth looking at the wiki. In particular the Research strategy and tips page.

The records described above by Karen Robinson might not refer to your ancestor, considering he died at the age of 2. However, it does provide a proof of concept. As you can see, you can find primary sources, such as the burial records, in the familysearch-catalog or on other websites such as openarch.nl.

If this doesn't help, feel free to ask an other question.

PS: Just a name (Jan Heijblom) is not enough to identify someone. I tend to add the familysearch-ID to let people know who I'm talking about.
