need help reading this
I have a marriage record that I am having trouble reading. It is Jorgen Christensen that married ____ Maria (no last name that I can see). married in 21 July 1816 in Ajstrup, Alborg. Can someone decipher this for me? Thanks, Ira

Thanks Shari that is what I think too. You've found the familysearch family I'm working on. I think I have the right person. Does it say anything about where she is from? I think it's the same place as her husband.
What does the next column say to the right of Marie? Not sure what that all means too. The title is the Groomsmen. I can see perhaps a Lars there but not sure. Could this be the father of the bride? Is that possible in Denmark?
I'm helping a friend do his genealogy. I'm pretty good at Dutch but Danish is a little bit tough for me.

I think the bride and groom are from Astrup (it was spelled with an i instead of a j). The next column is a tricky one for me so I'll give it some thought, but it ends with "both of Astrup".
It should be noted: There are two parishes in Aalborg with similar names, Store Ajstrup and Ajstrup. I see censuses attached to Johanne Marie indicating she was a resident of Store Ajstrup.

1860 census to consider indicating birth place for Jørgen and Johanne Marie. Do your studies begin with one of the children of this couple? This would help us start with a solid foundation for the family.

Thanks a bunch Shari, These are some really good hints. I think that 1860 census is telling me where I need to look for her because I know that Farstrup is part of the parish. At least it is recorded with Store Aistrup.
I started looking in Aistrup without the Store and it wasn't the right place. When I realized it really was Store Aistrup then things started falling into place. Takes a while to get used to a different country where you haven't done research before. This is good practice because I need to help my son-in-law with his Danish line too. It is a little difficult to read but still do-able.
Thanks again and if you come up with something about the next column I would be quite interested to know what it says. I can't make anything out of it.

Ira, we can study the children of the couple to learn who comes to the christenings. We can study the military levying roll for Jørgen.
Johanne m. Larsdatter FS record shows residence in 1890 Viborg, this needs review and documenting if accurate. The indexed records show events taking place in Ajstrup, it is more accurately Store Ajstrup. The column after the bride is for the sponsors of the bride and groom. I think the priest starts with "g:" = gaardmand. The third line with "h: m:". I see probably Møller = miller. These sponsors could be anyone.

I'm leaning towards Anders Møller for one of the sponsors. The line starts with H: M: An-
ders (on two different lines) Møller? of Aistrup.

Thanks Shari, These are all great hints and you've been a great help. I tried to find the 1801 census on Familysearch online but couldn't find it. This is a great find. The line is starting to come together now. I found a Johanne without the Marie Chr in Farstrup in 1787 the daughter of Lars. This could be the one but need more checking.
I think now with all this help I'll be able to put it all together and hopefully move the line back a few more generations at least.

More more question Shari, Is Lars = Laurs? The confirmation said Johanne Maria Laursdotter whereas the christening records all say Larsdatter. I suspect they are the same but thought I'd better ask because I'm not familiar with Danish records yet. If so then I need to take care and watch for the spelling variation. Thanks, Ira

Shari, I have another question. Where did you find the 1860 census for Jorgen Christensen and Johanne Maria Larsdatter? I found the original online but I'm curious about this typed version as to where you found it.

Ira, each researcher has their favorite tools, among my own is ddd.dda.dk which is where I do my census searches (I use others also). I use the Danish version, advanced search. Some folks find it very difficult to use this website. It is vital to understand that spelling must be exact to get the results you want. For example: A search for Maren Hansdatter will not find a Maren Hansen. So, your search would need to use a wild card to help. I would search for Maren Hans%. This would find both variants of the name. Here's another small example. A search for Kristian could look like: _ristian or %ristian. This would cover the name starting with a K or Ch. The underscore replaces one letter, the % replaces multiple letters. Your results will depend upon your knowledge of name variants. For example, Lars could be Laust, Lauritz, Laurs... so I search with La%. Learning how to use minimal information is best, if you input too much you'll likely not "catch" your person because you've been too specific. Start broad and narrow down if you get too many results. Some individuals like to use https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/ for their searches, it's also excellent. You did very well with viewing the original record which is always recommended.

Thanks Shari, I thought what I'd do is look up the census record and hopeful it will tell me the page number. That way I won't need to search the entire original film. I can do that of course but it would be easier to be able to go right to the entry. With a little practice the records can be read as you well know. I'll try out those websites and see what I can do. I looked for a word list on Wiki in familysearch but couldn't find one. Do you know of one I can printout? Thanks again, Ira
