How are parish records organized?
I understand how household exam records are played out- by village and farm, and I understand moving lengths- sorted by year in/ out. I have found a set of parents in a parish record, very limited household records available for the particular parish. I started at beginning going page by page and got lucky. Who is listed and how? Deniese, I am not sure if I understand your question correctly. Do you mean that how people are listed in one page, under some farm?
Usually household records contains several years. When the priest/clerk copied the names from the previous book, he looked who still lived on that farm when the time period of that household record book started and wrote those names on top of the page. Man (house owner of crofter) first then his wife and his children. Then he wrote the names of the workers, farmhands and maids and lodgers. When some person moved out or died, his/her name was crossed over. When people moved in, workers names were usually added at the bottom of the page. If the mover belonged to the family, his/her name was added some were in the middle. Usually the order of the names tells at what order people moved into that farm (page).

Heidi- thank you. I understand how the household records are organized but it is the parish records I was not sure about. I know each book covers a set of years but did the clerk just list everyone that lived in the parish randomly?

Ok. People were not listed just randomly. Every village and farm were usually listed in certain order. Let me think. I could explain this to you in Finnish, but in English, I do not use those words often

When I looked at parish records I did not see village or farm names like they have on the household exam records.

Sorry, now I don't understand, don't know if it is English (not my own language) or don't get my thoughts straight.
Household records are part of parish records. Also parish (an English word) means both församling (church) and socken which are different in Swedish. Usually when we speak of parish records we mean those församling books (household records, birth, marriage/bans, death, moving in/out). Then there are socken records which are e.g. land and taxation records.
Household records are only church parish records were people were listed with villages and farms. Others are listed with time.
Could you send a link to an example record which you are not understanding? It would help me a lot to explain

This is a page from from Hovförsamlingens parish book. I found family on this page by looking 1 page at a time.

In record listing it is listed to be a Församlingsböcker, Bild 7 (image) shows that the book name is Kyrkobok, mainly same thing.
This is different because the församlingen (parish) was different than other parishes. Normal (land) parish covers a certain part of the land, its villages and farms and its' records are also listed accordingly. Then there are city parishes were people are listed after the streets and districts.
This parish is unique, because its' people lived/worked in the palace. That's why there is no order, there were no possibility to sort people after were they lived. People are listed alfabetically (families after their father).

Just to make sure I understand- these parish records, if the parish is in country it will be organized similar to household records by village and farm. If the parish is in a city it will be organized by street. So to not have to go page by page I still have to at least know the village or area within the parish?

Yes, if the parish is in country it will be organized by village and farm. If the parish is in a city it will be organized by streets or more often by districts (qvarteret) and some minor cases in alfabetical order.
One thing for you to understand. Both in country and in city they had Husförhörslängder. Then about 1895 the same records were changed to Församlingsböcker. Only thing that changed was that in husförhörslängder to every people (over 15 yrs) was marked how he/she knew christianity and when he/she had partaken the holy communion. The name husförhörslänger means about household examination record or communion record
In församlingsböcker everything else is same except those markings . After change it is more like a list of people living in that church parish.
Yes, direct translation of församlingsböcker to English is parish records and that confused me because when speaking of parish records it usually means all records what that parish has.

Thank you ever so much. My apologies for all the confusion. I am working my way through all Stockholm parishes, county and city, in search of one person. I am checking death records, household records, Parish books, and moving lengths. Whatever is in each parish in the time I need. Do not know what else to do as last household record just says moved to Stockholm.

Most likely, if last household record says, moved to Stockholm, it means city parishes.

Heidi. Thank you again for all your help. Did not want to respond to this last reply at the time because I knew it was very late your time. I have refocused my search to Stockholm city parishes at your suggestion. I have used my heritage. Unless I drive to fhl I don't have access to Arkivdigital. The records I am searching are late 1830s so unless I misunderstood the Arkivdigital is most helpful for 1880 forward. Also it is not just finding person but finding any record in that time that will tell me where she next went to. Need to make a connection- fill a gap- to prove or disprove correct family. Next week I can go to our fhc and do the index search in ArkivDigital if you want to. I don't know the day yet, but on Friday at least. If it will be any help like you said that it is more helpful for 1880 forward.

Yes I got it. It is a little bigger and can make out other parishes if I look closely. If I get through them all with no luck I will check back for ideas or Arkivdigital help. ☺ Deniese

Hello. Sorry to ask for more help but just not finding what I am looking for. Family tree PID# GW5X-18Y Anna Sophia sources: birth record and house exam. Exam shows she moves to Stockholm in 1838, 10 years old. Rest of family moves to Farentuna in 1840. I used your chart but can not find her. Looked primarily in 1838 move in and 1842 move out. PID# 2WD8-DTN Anna Sophia sources household exam 1842 Vad. If reading correct moved in 1842, from where unknown, moved out 1842 to Mo. I am trying to fill in gap between 1838 and 1840 to see if really same person or not. Birth info does not match but no birth rec for Anna in Strängnäs. Barva Anna has aunt and uncle that were in Strängnäs in given time, so possible connection. Thank you for any and all help. Deniese

Hi, I was today at out fhc and I did searches with ArkivDigital. Sorry, I could not find anything.
But I am 99.9% certain that your Anna Sophia's are same person.
Before Anna Sophia GW5X-18Y moves to Stockholm she is living with her family in Oknö, Arnö, Upsala and when you look from the map, you can see that the island of Oknö belongs to Strängnäs municipality currently. When a little girl moves on her own and several times without a certificate it is easy for birth information to change. The moving certificate was the way how the information changed between parishes. If there was no certificate the information was given only by the person. Back then birth dates were not so important than now.
The family had moved already couple times after Barva, to Vansö (small parish next to Strängnäs) and Aspö. Living always close to Strängnäs. So it is very possible that when young child moves alone, he/she remembers the big city. And there is only about a month between their birth dates.
