Batches for Batches
Years ago I saw an idea that was shared for encouraging Indexing. The idea was called Cookies-for-Batches Indexing Challenge. This shared idea was to host an indexing activity for youth once a month and reward them with cookies. I've adjusted this idea for my ward and this is the first month trying it, but I'll tell you the enthusiasm for indexing in our ward has really increased this month! I call this Batches for Batches. Just by indexing a batch of records any time in the month of October that person will earn 3 cookies, payable the next month. We are starting to get some ward members who have never indexed wanting to try and some who haven't in a while. I don't think I would do this every month, but I'm think either quarterly or twice a year. I've attached the flier we used to advertise this activity.

I love the fact that you didn't introduce competition or a large quantity of indexing into your plan. That can breed embarrassment for those not keeping up with the super-stars, and also introduce more errors due to speed vs. accuracy. Nice idea!!

Well we no longer can see how many records a person is indexing individually-so that just nicely worked out! Fortunately some of the people indexing want to keep up with it and will try to index more than the one batch.

I've been looking for an idea, and this sounds good, and especially since it is non-competitive. With CoVid, the idea may be on hold for now, but I'll share it with my team. The flier did not download. Would love to see it.

@nanlwar nanlwar Just in case you missed it, it's at the top of the large version of the thumbnail that you should be able to see embedded within @BarbaraWHowell BarbaraWHowell 's post. Just click in the middle of the small thumbnail-sized version in her post, and then at the top of the image that shows up on your screen, you should see both a download option and a view details option just above the cookies photo and "For the month of October Only" notice. Click the download option and it should come to your computer as a .jpg file. The download bar disappears after a few seconds, so that might have been the problem for you, but just move your mouse around over the flyer image itself once it's open on your screen, and the download line should reappear.

I read these ideas and immediately passed them onto my AP/YW leaders as just over the weekend I was asked about such. Serendipity? NOT. The Lord is amazing!

I likeThis idea. Are the families self reporting to you?

I am a Stake Temple and Family History Consultant and as such I can create a report that shows me ward by ward everyone who has indexed that month, quarter or year. For the batches for batches activity I run the report and just look at all who are indexing from my ward. If you are a ward or stake Temple and Family History Consultant I imagine you can also run a report showing you everyone in your ward who indexed for that month. So to answer your question I am not having families self report to me. I can see. They need to be indexing using their own FamilySearch account and not sharing accounts.

I thought that report was only viewable by priesthood leaders now. Have you accessed it lately? If so, how do you find it?

Yes, I pull up that report all the time. when you go to the web indexing page scroll down the page to where it shows your groups. You should see the name of your ward group. Click on your Ward Group and it will take you to a new page that shows your wards progress. If you are allowed access to the reports you will see a blue box labeled Reports to the right of where it says Progress. If you have access to the reports, select the Reports button and you will come to another page. This is where you generate your Report. Select Organization Statistics. You can select for the Current or previous month, quarter or year. After you make that selection click on the blue box that says Generate Report. You then will have generated a report that shows you the total records indexed or reviewed by your group and the names of all those who contributed to that effort during the time period. If you are a Temple and Family History Consultant in your Ward and you find that you do not have access to that report, it may be that your ward clerk needs to make an adjustment in how your calling is labeled in the church's system. Hope this helps!

They have had problems in the recent past with competitions between the youth (who can index more etc). The problem was when they compete for numbers the accuracy goes way down.
A ward in our Coordinating Council had a different take for the youth. They had them index names and then, after awhile, had them see who had names from furthest away, or closest to them (the city), or the oldest male and female etc. it made them realize more the details in what they were doing.

Have you seen reverse indexing on https://fhtl.byu.edu/
It is easier and faster. My 11 year old enjoys this.
