Have you tried looking in Ancestry? They have a very good UK census collection. If you haven't done this before, just go to "Search"/Census & Voter Lists/UK Census Collection an put in the information on the person you are searching for. If you don't check the "Exact" box, it will automatically look for name variations. You can specify the year and specific country if you want to. If you still don't find it, look for someone else in the family if you can. Sometimes names are written so that they are virtually unrecognizable. Good luck!

Yes that is him but cannot find where he is in 1861 census, he would be about 18, was he still in Scotland or had he come to England? The strange thing is he gets married to Mary Ann Brown in Whiston, Mary was from Easton Northamptonshire. He died when my Grandmother was 2.

Could this be your George Whitecross? He is listed as 18 years old and a plumber which is the occupation that is listed for your George on another census record.
